James Moorcroft: “I’m a Dangerous Fighter”

James Moorcroft vs. Anthony Tomlinson

James Moorcroft believes suffering his first defeat last time out has been the making of him, and says he will beat Anthony Tomlinson when they clash for a soon-to-be-confirmed welterweight title on May 21 at Sheffield Arena Car Park.

In his last outing in January 2020, the Wigan fighter travelled to Scotland to take on Martin Harkin in a British Title eliminator, suffering a fifth round stoppage defeat that left him with a 13-1 (5 KOs) ledger.

Since that reverse, the 28-year-old has teamed up with former world lightweight champion – turned trainer – Anthony Crolla, and has hailed the improvements he’s made under the Manchester man’s guidance.

Moorcroft will have to be on top form to get the win over Tomlinson. ‘The Truth’, who will be fighting in his home city, is undefeated in 12 with seven KOs and has already won Central Area and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Continental belts.

Undaunted, Moorcroft insists he is a different fighter under Crolla, and won’t be leaving Sheffield empty-handed.

“I believe the way that Anthony has got me boxing, I can win and win well,” said the full-time pro.  “It’s going absolutely unbelievable and I’m in a totally different place. We’ve got back to old-school, and been building everything back up. I’m ready to put a big show on because I’m now boxing how I should do, in the right way.

“It’s good to know that he [Crolla] was willing to take me on.  I must have something there that he likes because he wouldn’t be training me if I didn’t. It’s a great vibe in the gym, I’ve never been happier and that makes me a dangerous fighter.”

Dennis Hobson and Steve Crump’s Fight Academy present an evening of boxing at Sheffield Arena Car Park on May 21. Headlining will be Sheffield’s Anthony Tomlinson versus Wigan’s James Moorcroft. Chief support will see English Lightweight champion Myron Mills from Derby defending his title against Portsmouth challenger, Lucas Ballingall – and Sheffield’s Kane Salvin defending the Central Area Super Featherweight crown against Manchester’s Michael Gomez Jr, with the contest also doubling as an eliminator for the English belt.

Also appearing will be Norwich light-heavyweight Iain Martell, super-lightweight Tommy Collins and Katie Healy from Birmingham, Bradford’s Nathan Cawood, Rob Magill from York, and Portsmouth’s Elley Booth.

TV coverage for the show will be announced soon.
