Wolverhampton’s Kirstie Bavington was crowned EBU European Welterweight Champion on Friday evening.

The 29 year-old defeated Hungarian Timea Belik via unanimous decision to claim the vacant European title on BCB Promotions’ show at The Hangar in her hometown.

“I’m buzzing,” she said afterwards. “This is for all the people who said you can’t do anything with your life. I’m here now as European Champion.

“I was trying my best to stop Belik but fair play she stood with me and made it a helluva fight.”

‘Bavvo’ boxed to order throughout and showed her engine as she maintained a frenetic pace for the entire ten rounds.

Whilst Belik went into the bout with more title experience, it was Bavington who controlled the pace and flow of the fight to claim victory.

The three ringside judges scored the contest 100-90, 99-91, 99-92 to the local lass who claimed the vacant strap.

“We’re so proud of Kirstie and the whole gym,” added Head Trainer, Paul Mann. “It just shows that hard work and dedication pays off.

“We’ve won countless British, Commonwealth, English and Area titles over the years but this is the first European Title back at BCB HQ and that means a lot to us all.”

Bavington’s victory topped a stacked night of boxing at The Hangar.

There were points wins for former Midlands Area welterweight champ Conah Walker, Cannock super welterweight Ollie Cooper, Wolverhampton Welterweight, Jermaine ‘Kundalini King’ Osbourne-Edwards, Wednesfield middleweight Alex ‘Razor’ Round and Exeter welterweight Shannon Willey.

Ollie Cooper is ready to let his hands go when he chases a maiden pro TKO at the fourth time of asking.

He’s set for further ring time as part of BCB Promotions’ show in Wolverhampton, at the Hangar Events Venue (Pearson Street), on the Friday evening of May 6.

It’s been a learning curve for the 21-year-old southpaw, who debuted last October after previously going close to top domestic honours, as an amateur.

He reached a national final in the England Youth Championships, as part of an amateur run that saw him amass 26 bouts, with 18 victories among them.

His pro bow saw him outpoint double centurion Kevin McCauley by a points landslide, winning all four rounds to register a 40-36 whitewash.

He’s since tackled Paul Cummings and Josh Cook, vanquishing both through a 40-37 points verdict, dropping just a share of one round in each contest.

Cooper, from Cannock, reckons he’s developed over the course of those pro experiences and has used his latest training camp to focus on punching power.

He is also of the opinion that he’s filling out his 6ft 4in frame, with a height advantage over opponents in the middleweight division already apparent.

Cooper said: “No disrespect to Josh (Cook) and it wasn’t easy, but I thought I was able to sit back and box a bit more, which was nice, and that allowed me to dictate the pace.

“I felt like I got on the front foot more and showed some dominance, which proves that I’m adapting to the pro style and trying to change from being an amateur.

“I’ve worked more in this camp on being aggressive and I’m feeling a lot fitter and stronger, so the plan is to get the stoppage, if the opportunity comes along.

“I’m only 21 and maybe I’m a late developer, in terms of my man strength coming through. Slowly, but surely, it’s getting there now, although it’s nowhere near at 100 per cent.

“I’m feeling a lot more comfortable and, in sparring, I’m not getting pushed back or being bullied by my opponents. I’m improving, all of the time.

“I want to campaign at middleweight and apart from against Kev (McCauley), which was actually at super welter, I’ve managed to do that.

“I’ve shown bits of what I’m capable of and I feel like I could box in my sleep sometimes. The boxing brain is definitely there and that’s a good foundation for me.”

Wolverhampton’s Jermaine Osbourne-Edwards dedicated his latest victory to his grandmother who passed away earlier this week.

The 32 year-old welterweight continued his fine form since turning over to the professional ranks as he recorded his third straight victory at The Hangar Events Venue, Wolverhampton, on Friday evening.

Earlier in the week Osbourne-Edwards’ beloved nan passed away and the likeable Wolverhampton boxer admitted that he almost pulled out of his headliner as a result.

He managed to channel the strength to fight on though and, in front of his partisan crowd, The Kundalini King boxed well to record a 40-36 win over Newark’s Fonz Alexander.

Osbourne-Edwards’ popularity continues to grow; as does his boxing prowess.

It was a patient and controlled performance against Alexander on an evening that was full of adrenaline and emotion.

Cannock middleweight Ollie Cooper also moved to 3-0 with a composed performance against Manchester’s Josh Cook.

Tall and rangy at the weight, Cooper didn’t rush his work and caught Cook cold with a number of solid hooks that looked to have his opponent in trouble in the opening stanza. Credit to Cook though he bit down on his gum shield and, as Cooper realised Cook was there for the duration, began to pick his shots and eased to a 40-37 win.

Telford flyweight Bradley Thompson stepped into the unknown against Jack Dwyer.

Dwyer, with a solitary loss on his one fight record, absolutely came to win and stood in front of Thompson for the entire four rounds.

Thompson’s superior array of shots and footwork kept the game Liverpudlian at bay but it was a different test for the highly touted Telford fighter. Class shone through in the end with Thompson recording a 40-36 win to move to 3-0.

After getting the better of Kearon Thomas back in November, Andy Owen was at it again.

The Staffordshire super middleweight’s superior fitness showed against his Walsall-based opponent who, as usual, was as game as they come.

Owen had much more in the tank though and that allowed him to dictate the pace and keep Thomas on the back foot to record back-to-back 40-36 wins over his now familiar foe.

Darlaston’s Vicky Wilkinson moved to 2-0 as she defeated experienced Pole, Bojana Libiszewska.

The lightweight pair stood and traded for all eight minutes and Wilkinson can be pleased with her work rate and durability against the teak tough Libiszewska.

On his pro bow, Essington’s Ryan ‘Rampage’ Cotterell made light work of Dave Preston.

The stellar amateur introduced himself to the professional ranks by showing his heavy hands.

Landing bomb after a bomb, a perfectly timed overhand right, right on the bell of the first round sent Preston sprawling to the canvass. Unable to recover, the Dudley man saw his night cut short. Impressive from Cotterell.

The action was complete with a real barnstormer.

Birmingham bantamweight Matthew ‘Swiggy’ Craddock moved to 5-1 as he put Lancashire’s Stevie ‘Livewire’ Maguire to the sword after an absorbing contest that ebbed and flowed.

Craddock had Maguire down in the second and looked like he was in control before being sat down himself in the third.

Credit to Swiggy though, he bit down on his gum shield and saw the six rounder through to a 58-55 finish.

Ollie Cooper reckons it’s a priority to catch the eye when he attempts to make it a hat-trick of pro wins.

His third pro outing comes as part of BCB Promotions’ show in Wolverhampton, at the Hangar Events Venue (Pearson Street), on the Friday night of February 18.

He’s recorded two points victories so far, without dropping a round, in overcoming Kevin McCauley and Paul Cummings.

When turning over, last October, left-hander Cooper stuck to his southpaw jab to claim all four sessions, registering a 40-36 landslide score at the final bell.

He then went up against Paul Cummings in December, again prevailing on points although they shared the last stanza, leading to a 40-37 verdict.

Both of those contests took place at the Hangar and he’ll again box under those lights, with aims to impress the audience in attendance.

The 21-year-old, from Cannock, has the benefit of a decent amateur grounding and 6ft 4in of height, plus the input of ex-pro Richie Carter as coach.

Cooper amassed 18 victories from 26 amateur bouts, mostly representing Wolverhampton Boxing Club, and reached a national final in the England Youth Championships.

He said: “I want to push on this year, it’s time to get my head down and live the boxing lifestyle fully. I’m determined to make a name for myself and stand out.

“I’m going into this fight looking to stand out from everyone on the rest of the bill, there’s a lot of young lads and I need to open people’s eyes. That gives me the motivation to push on.

“I was trying to campaign at super welter, but I couldn’t do the weight and I feel much more comfortable at middleweight. I’m still training very hard.

“I’ll be in there with bigger men, but there are different areas to my game that beat strength and power. I can punch myself, but I haven’t been able to showcase that much.

“I hurt Paul (Cummings) in my last one, I put together a combination in the third and I saw his legs dip, but he just kept on coming. I wondered what it was going to take to stop him!

“He caught me, as well, with an overhand right, in the last round and that seemed to drain the last of my energy. It was a shock to the system.

“It happened on my debut, too. I get to a point where I’m so comfortable in there that I take my foot off the gas. That’s what I’ve been working on, staying switched on.

“I’ve come away from both fights with little things that I need to work on, I’ve watched them back and picked out other pointers, so I think I’ll improve again. I’m still finding my feet.”

Ollie Cooper plans to settle in the middleweight division and start making noises against the bigger men at 160lbs.

He next performs on BCB Promotions’ next show in Wolverhampton, at the Hangar Events Venue (Pearson Street), on the Sunday afternoon of December 12.

His original plan was to campaign at super welter, but that has proved too much for the tall and rangy operator in boiling down to.

It was indeed a middleweight affair when his pro debut came along, taking on the super-experienced Kevin McCauley on the last Hangar card.

He had done his homework on the 42-year-old veteran, who is closing on 250 fights as a professional and rarely does not see the finish.

Cooper used his southpaw stance to establish the jab and had McCauley covering up, by the final bell, as he claimed every session of the four rounds to record a 40-36 points verdict.

The 21-year-old, from Cannock, was left reasonably pleased with the night’s work, and reckons he will show versatility when he has to come out of his shell.

The left-hander plans to move as the situation dictates, going forward, and use his guile should imposing adversaries come along.

Cooper gains more experience after a solid amateur grounding, which saw him claim two area titles and reach a national final in the England Youth Championships.

He signed off from unpaid action with 18 wins from 26 bouts, finishing up at Wolverhampton Boxing Club, where coach Richie Carter then took him into the pro ranks.

Cooper said: “It’s great to be boxing at the same place again, there was a good turn-out last time and it was a huge experience for me to perform in front of that crowd.

“I’d heard positive things about the Hangar before, but for my name to be up there in lights was a massive buzz. Now I know what to expect, I can get even more excited about it.

“Kevin (McCauley) was the perfect opponent for my debut, he’s been around the block a couple of hundred times and taught me what the pro game is all about.

“I took one look at his record, going into it, and it was obvious that I wasn’t going to knock him out, not many people do, so it was important to win every round.

“I went to work, took my time and picked my shots. It was so different from the amateurs, where two fighters go at it like bulls at a gate and rely on their fitness.

“There were things that I could have done better and I’ve learned a lot from watching the fight back, a considerable amount of times!

“I’m moving up to middleweight, which will take a lot of stress off me and I still feel strong. I’ve had lads in sparring tell me I can bang, so I’m not worried.

“It was becoming a real push to make super welter. I’m 6ft 4in, so I never found it easy, but I worked at it for weeks and only little bits were coming off. I was weighing myself, twice a day.

“I have been going over, in my head, what might happen if I end up in the ring with a naturally-bigger opponent, but I’m adaptable enough to cope.

“I’m not afraid to mix it up, which is a big part of my game. I can box at range, or stand there in the middle and scrap, whatever I need to do.

“I’ve always said that if you stick to one style of boxing, someone will always come along who can do that better than you. It’s better to change things around.”

Conah Walker put Jack Ewbank to the sword inside a round in Wolverhampton last night.

‘The Wolf’ made light work of Ewbank in a change to BCB Promotions’ main event as they continue to go from strength to strength.

Walker was due to defend his Midlands Area Welterweight Title against Jamie Stewart only for the Stoke man to be informed of an issue with his brain scan on Wednesday.

The previously unbeaten Ewbank was drafted in at short notice as both he and Walker put their “0’s” on the line.

It was Walker who kept his as he moved to 10-0-1 with Ewbank moving out to 4-1 after a one sided affair.

26 year-old Walker started like a train and put his Kent based opponent on his backside with almost his first punch.

Walker didn’t give his opponent time to settle and a flurry of spiteful shots soon saw Ewbank touch the canvass once again.

Looking visibly shocked, Ewbank looked to his corner as if to question what he was doing in the adrenaline fuelled Hangar Events Centre in the beating heart of Wolverhampton.

The 31 year-old was sent back out but didn’t last long under another barrage of shots which led to the towel being thrown in after two minutes and seven seconds of the opening stanza.

It was impressive and spiteful from Walker, trained by Richie Ghent, who appeared to revel in the white-hot atmosphere.

Elsewhere on the packed card four debutants were in action; all from Richie Carter’s Wolverhampton Boxing Club.

Bloxwich’s Lewis Morris boxed well against the always tricky Reiss ‘Showy’ Taylor. With an obvious height advantage, Morris actually found it difficult to land cleanly on Taylor but stayed disciplined throughout to earn a 40-36 win over four rounds.

Cannock’s Ollie Cooper also recorded a shut out win on his pro bow as he kept Kevin McCauley quiet in what was his opponent’s 241st outing.

Jermaine Osbourne-Edwards’ army of fans nearly brought the house down as ‘The Caveman’ made his long awaited pro debut. MJ Hall was in the opposite corner but Wolverhampton l’s Osbourne-Edwards stayed disciplined and again picked up a 40-36 win.

Wednesfield’s Alex Round was arguably the most impressive of the four debutants on show as he put Bloxwich’s Kearon Thomas to the sword to record a shut out win over four rounds.

Darlaston’s Ethan Collins, who only turned professional three weeks ago, was back in action and followed up that impressive display with another accomplished performance against the teak tough Des Newton. Collins threw the kitchen sink at Newton who, to his credit, took the lot but succumbed to a 40-36 loss.

Completing the card was Wolverhampton’s Kirstie Bavington who took on Stoke debutant Beccy Ferguson. In a slugging affair, Bav came out 60-55 victor.

BCB Promotions are delighted to announce our return to Wolverhampton next month.

Local lad Conah Walker (9-0-1) tops the bill at the Hangar on Friday, 1st October, as he makes a maiden defence of the Midlands Area Welterweight Title he claimed back in May.

The 26 year-old defeated Levi Ferguson in a Fight of the Year Contender in Sheffield and will be looking to cement his place as King of the Midlands when he steps in with Stoke’s Jamie Stewart.

Stewart (2-2-1), two years Walker‘s senior, burst on to the last year when he defeated Michael Hennessy Junior before drawing with much-touted Albanian, Florian Marku, at Wembley Arena.

It’s a tough first defence for Walker but one that the Wolverhampton Man will be confident of overcoming as he looks to step up to English Title level and beyond.

Walker is joined by fellow Wolverhampton fighters Kyle Williams, Kirstie Bavington, Andy Owen and debutant Jermaine Osbourne-Edwards.

Williams returns after more than a year out of the ring. The former Midlands and English Bantamweight Champion put in a stellar performance against Charlie Edwards last time out and will be looking to get back to winning ways and rebuild a very promising career.

Bavington meanwhile is back in action just months after her war with Sandy Ryan at Matchroom HQ in July. The Lone Wolf will be looking to get back to winning ways as she plots her own course in the pro game at super lightweight.

Super middleweight Owen is in action next weekend at Walsall FC’s Banks’s Stadium looking to build on an impressive pro debut earlier this year. The Richie Carter trained prospect will be joined, subject to BBBoC approval, by stablemate Jermaine Osbourne-Edwards.

Fellow Carter debutants – Wednesfield’s Alex Round and Cannock’s Ollie Cooper – are also set for their debut at middleweight and super welterweight respectively whilst Swandlincote super lightweight Connor Parker makes a welcome return to the ring for the first time since March 2020.
