Peter McGrail will have “unfinished business” on his mind when he fights on the undercard of a monster show in Japan this December.

The brilliantly gifted super bantamweight has secured a place on the undercard of the huge undisputed world bantamweight title showdown between Naoya Inoue and Paul Butler in Tokyo.

McGrail returns to Japan on December 13 ready to draw a line under the disappointment of his Olympic exit in the country last year and show the world of boxing why he remains destined for the pinnacle of the sport.

The Liverpool fighter headlined his first show at Probellum Liverpool II on Saturday night, and delivered a performance worthy of his billing, as he broke the spirit of Alexander Espinoza and forced him to retire at the start of round six.

McGrail (5-0, 4 KOs) now turns his attention to an eight-round contest with Hironori Miyake at the Ariake Arena and ending 2022 with a bang in Japan.

“I’ve got unfinished business in Japan,” McGrail told Probellum.com.

“The last time I was there, I had a belter of a trip with the team, a trip that will be me for the rest of my life, and I’m proud of where I got to, as an amateur and going to the Olympics, but I just feel as though I’ve got unfinished business.

“And it would be nice to go over there and get the win. I should’ve got a few wins when I was there last time, but it’s a different game now, that was the amateurs, but I’ve got unfinished business.”

Peter McGrail broke the spirit of Alexander Espinoza and forced a sixth-round stoppage with a masterclass display in front of his fans.

The majestic McGrail dropped the tough Nicaraguan with a peach of a backhand in round four at Probellum Liverpool II at the Eventim Olympia and continued to systematically dismantle his experienced rival.

McGrail, one of the stand-out world amateurs of his generation, was ready to dish out further punishment at the start of round six but Espinoza’s corner threw in the towel and retired their forlorn fighter.

A proud son of Liverpool, McGrail moves to 5-0 (4 KOS) as a pro having made the sternest test of his career appear impressively straightforward.

McGrail said: “This was my first time topping a bill and the crowd were unbelievable.

“I thought it was a good performance, it wasn’t 10 out of 10, but overall, I am happy.  It was a step-up on paper so I’m happy to get him out of there, because he went 10 rounds with Kash Farooq last year.

“I am overwhelmed by the support and can’t wait for the next one already!”

Jazza Dickens won the vacant IBO world featherweight title after a hard fought 12 rounds with tough South African Lerato Dlamini.

Dickens has twice failed in his attempts to win world titles, but it was third time lucky for the popular 31-year-old, who was awarded the win on all three of the judges’ scorecards.

Roared on by huge support, Dickens was given the win 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 by the officials and will now target the biggest fights in the division, against Leigh Wood and Josh Warrington.

An emotional Dickens said: “I have been working for this for 18 long hard years.

“But I did it with my fans, we did it together.  Tonight, I am going to celebrate with everyone in Liverpool.”

Steven Cairns extended his perfect professional record by controlling his six-round fight with Angelo Turco.
Cairns, who won 60-53 on the scorecards, said: “The holding from Turco was a little bit frustrating but this is boxing and that is just another bit of experience.”

Joe McGrail came through the “toughest fight” of his fledgling career, as he survived a cut and a damaged hand to record a clear points win.

McGrail defeated Nicaraguan Alexander Taylor 59-55, with brother Peter watching on from ringside, to move to 6-0, but 19-year-old Joe said that didn’t tell the whole story.

He sustained a cut by the side of his left eye and hurt his hand, both in the second round.

McGrail said: “It was the toughest fight I’ve had so far as a pro.
“In the second round I got a cut after an accidental elbow and then, in the same round I’ve hurt my right hand.  I didn’t throw it much after that, my coach told me to feint with it and throw it to the body, where it was soft.”

Peter McGrail says victory over Alexander Espinoza will be the launchpad towards title fights and “big things” next year.

McGrail shared a final stare down with Nicaraguan puncher Espinoza at Friday’s weigh-in ahead of his headline fight at Probellum Liverpool II.

The future world champion has only had four fights as a professional, but the Liverpudlian’s stellar amateur career means he is ready to be moved quickly towards title class.

And McGrail, who tipped the scales at 124.2lbs at the Eventim Olympia, knows a win over the experienced Espinoza will catapult him towards fights with domestic rivals Jason Cunningham, Liam Davies and Gamal Yafai – fighters the Everton fan is already confident of beating.

“At this moment in time, I’m nowhere near close to the rankings as I’ve only had four fights, but I believe over the next two or three fights, I’m going to be pushing into that top 10 domestically,” McGrail said.

“But there’s no-one even in the top four that I wouldn’t back myself against. I believe the experience I’ve had in the amateurs and boxing for Great Britain over the years, none of them in the top 10 in Great Britain would worry me.

“Cunningham has been European champion and Davies has the British, one million per cent, I believe I’d beat them.

“But I’m not one to call people out. I leave all of that down to my management team, Probellum and my coach Paul Stevenson. All I can do is make sure I am at my best in fights and I’m pretty sure that over the next few years we’re going to be showing that I’m number one.

“This feels like the start of big things for me. Next year will be the looking to start collecting some belts, it’s been a long time coming.”

Peter McGrail delivered a chilling big fight prediction when he came face-to-face with Alexander Espinoza for the first time ahead of Probellum Liverpool II.

World-champion-in-the-making McGrail headlines a packed card at the Eventim Olympia on Saturday night and has vowed to make light work of the hardest fight of his professional career, in front of his raucous fans.

The co-main event sees Jazza Dickens face dangerman Lerato Dlamini for the vacant IBO world featherweight title and the pair exchanged pre-fight barbs at Thursday’s press conference.

A confident Dlamini told host Ali Drew that he plans to cause a major upset and KO his rival, which prompted Dickens to ditch the pleasantries and set the South African straight.

Big fights for McGrail and Dickens are supported by a host of talented prospects, including Joe McGrail and Steven Cairns, with the action live and free to watch on Probellum.com.

Super bantamweight star, Peter McGrail said: “I see a one-sided fight, with me hitting him loads and him not hitting me much at all.

The stakes have been raised for Jazza Dickens after it was confirmed he will now fight for the vacant IBO world featherweight title at Probellum Liverpool II.

Dickens faces the dangerous Lerato Dlamini at the Eventim Olympia on Saturday, October 15 as part of a big punching show that includes Peter McGrail’s hardest fight to date and the UK debut of the frightening heavyweight Bakhodir Jalolov.

Liverpool favourite Dickens knows there is no easy route back to the top of the division after last year’s world title attempt and the fight with Dlamini (18-1, 10KOs) comes on the back of April’s clash with former European champion Andoni Gago.

Dickens (31-4, 12KOs) sparkled in front of his home fans that night, impressively stopping the Spaniard, but the 31-year-old is braced for a tougher night against South African Dlamini, with the IBO crown now up for grabs.

Jazza Dickens said: “My route back towards the top of the division is laced with dangerous fighters, none more so than Dlamini.

“But if I want to land those huge fights with Josh Warrington, Leigh Wood, and the rest of the other champions, then I have to get past him.

“There is no room for error, I must produce the best performance of my career and so the stakes are extremely high on October 15.”

Dickens will not only put himself in the frame for featherweight mega fights by winning the vacant IBO belt, but the southpaw can also follow in the footsteps of two legends.

Marco Antonio Barrera and Prince Naseem Hamed have previously won the title and the crown was on the line when the pair met in a 2001 Las Vegas showdown.

But Dlamini arrives in Liverpool in confident mood having warmed up for the IBO clash with a fourth round TKO win, on Saturday night.

Dickens’ shot at glory comes as Probellum return to Liverpool following the huge success of April’s event, in which Paul Butler set up an undisputed world title fight with Naoya Inoue, by out-classing Jonas Sultan.

Probellum Liverpool II sees McGrail headline his first show, when he takes on Nicaraguan hardman Alexander Espinoza, with 6’7” Jalolov ready to reinforce his reputation as the heir apparent to the heavyweight crown.

An undercard packed with next gen talent features Joe McGrail, Steven Cairns and Will Cawley, while the seasoned Alex Dilmaghani sharpens his tools ahead of a major fight, penciled in for later this year.

Peter McGrail faces the hardest fight of his career when he headlines a major show in Liverpool next month.

McGrail tops the bill at the Eventim Olympia on Saturday, October 15 and takes on the dangerous Nicaraguan Alexander Espinoza over 10 rounds, in a milestone moment for the former amateur sensation.

A world-champion-in-the-making, McGrail (4-0, 3KOs) knows a win over Espinoza (21-4-2) will make his rivals sit up and take note as he picks up the pace on his journey to the top of the super bantamweight division.

McGrail is the star attraction as Probellum returns to Liverpool next month, but he is supported in the co-main event by Jazza Dickens who fights the hard-hitting South African Lerato Dlamini.

Dickens (31-4, 12KOs) enters into another high stakes contest as he rebuilds towards a world title shot and Dlamini (17-1, 9KOs) – known as ‘Lights Out’ – cares not for reputations having caused an upset in his only previous fight outside of his homeland.

Probellum Liverpool II also includes the must-see UK debut of Olympic super heavyweight champion Bakhodir Jalolov who has a frightening 100% KO record as a pro.

Peter McGrail said: “Alexander Espinoza comes to fight and does not take a backwards step, so this is easily the hardest fight of my career to date.

“But I’ve said many times before that I am more than ready for these challenges and believe that I am as good as anyone in the division when it comes to skills and ability, but now I need the rounds and the experience to go with it.

“Espinoza will push me, but I plan on making a statement to the rest of the division by hitting him with my blurring hand speed and then closing the show with a vicious stoppage.”

Hailing from the proud fighting nation of Nicaragua, Espinoza will not be overawed by travelling into the lion’s den in Liverpool.

The 29-year-old, whose nickname is ‘Supernova’, lost a contentious decision to former amateur stand-out Mikhail Aloyan in Russia before giving Kash Farooq all he could handle in a battle last year, leaving the Scot with cuts over both eyes and a damaged cheek at the end of 10 rounds.

Hometown hero Peter McGrail headlines his first major show in Liverpool next month alongside some of the city’s top boxing stars.

Probellum returns to the famous fighting city in October after the success of Probellum Liverpool in April when headliner Paul Butler set up his undisputed bantamweight blockbuster with Naoya Inoue, by winning the WBO title with a masterclass display against Jonas Sultan.

But it is world-champion-in-the-making McGrail who is the headline attraction this time and the local hero will be joined on the card by Uzbekistan’s Olympic gold medallist – and heir-in-waiting to the heavyweight throne – Bakhodir Jalolov, who carries with him a frightening 100% KO record.

Other Liverpool favourites set to enter the ring include world ranked featherweight Jazza Dickens, former world super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding and the unbeaten Joe McGrail (5-0, 2KOs) – Peter’s younger brother.

The older McGrail brother (4-0, 3KOs) dazzled at Probellum’s debut Liverpool show and will take centre stage in front of his growing legion of fans next month as his journey towards the top of the super bantamweight division moves up a gear.

Peter McGrail said: “It has been a long-held dream of mine to headline a show in Liverpool but to do so, with an undercard as strong as this one, makes this even more special.

“The level of talent on show at Probellum Liverpool is set to be scarily good and as the headline fighter, I am determined to showcase why I am a future world champion.

Heavyweight destroyer Jalolov (11-0, 11KOs) continues his march towards the summit of boxing’s marquee division by fighting in the UK for the first time as a professional.

Jalolov, known as ‘The Big Uzbek’, brings devastating punch power to Liverpool and is ready to reinforce his reputation as the heir to the heavyweight throne.

The 6’7” puncher won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and there is a rapidly growing belief that Jalolov will take over the division in the coming years.

And while the two-time world title challenger waits for his next opportunity, he will aim to turn the heat up on his 126lbs rivals with a statement display, following April’s stunning stoppage of Andoni Gago.

Fielding (30-2, 18KOs) wants a chance to reclaim the world super middleweight title he won in 2018 and will use Probellum’s return to reinforce his credentials for another shot at the belt.

Ranked highly by the WBA, the 35-year-old is well-placed for a second tilt at world glory and knows an impressive win in his hometown will only aid his cause.

Peter McGrail aims to pick up an army of new fans as he fights in Sunderland next month before a potential homecoming title shot.

The brilliant Liverpool puncher has a fifth professional fight at the Stadium of Light, on Sunday July 17 as part of a Phil Jeffries promotion.

McGrail has been in dazzling form since progressing from the amateur ranks and says after he comes through his Sunderland assignment, he will be ready for the first title fight of his pro career, which he hopes will be in front of his home fans in Liverpool.

The buzz around the super bantamweight is growing with each fight and McGrail wants to have more fans on board by the time he has left the North East.

“It’s great to be fighting in a new city and I’m going to use the opportunity to win a few more fans,” McGrail said.

“I’ll be using this fight in Sunderland as a warm-up for a return to Liverpool later in the year and I am pushing for that to be a title fight.

“I’m 26 and there is no point in waiting around.  I did pretty much all I could do in the amateur game and so far in the pros, I am beating my opponents comfortably.  So, it is time to push on and hopefully I can set up that title fight landing another KO, at the Stadium of Light.”

Paul Butler has described the “unbelievable” feeling of becoming a two-time bantamweight champion of the world.

Butler out-pointed late replacement Jonas Sultan at Probellum Liverpool tonight to claim the WBO interim world title in front of his passionate fans.

The expectation is that the WBO will officially elevate Butler to the full champion and the 33-year-old and his fans are this evening celebrating him becoming a two-time title holder.

Butler won the IBF crown in 2014 but soon relinquished his belt to chase honours at super-flyweight and he admits it has been a “long journey” to get back to the top of the 118lbs division.

Butler was given the decision by all three ringside judges who scored the contest 116-112, 118-110 and 117-111 in favour of the local hero.

The new champion said: “It’s unbelievable, what a feeling!

“I have waited a long time to be a two-time world champion.

“It’s been a long journey and we only had 48 hours to come up with a gameplan for Sultan but that’s what I can do.  I nullified the bull tonight.”

Peter McGrail has warned the super-bantamweight division that he is only going to get “better and better” after recording a third straight stoppage win.

The Liverpool star halted Uriel Lopez in the fourth round after overwhelming the Mexican with yet another masterful display.

McGrail, now 4-0, said: “I am going to keep getting better and better.

“And hopefully, in the future, there will be some big nights coming to Liverpool.  We’re the next stock coming through, and we will be bringing world titles back to this city.”

Probellum’s Sam Jones added: “That was a great decision by the referee to stop the fight, Lopez was taking a lot of damage.

“This guy will be selling this arena out very, very soon and he will win world titles in numerous weight divisions.  Get behind Peter McGrail – what a fighter!”

Peter McGrail bamboozled and beat up Alexandru Ionita to reinforce his reputation as one of boxing’s hottest prospects.

McGrail forced his Romania rival to quit at the end of the second round at Probellum Evolution in Dubai tonight having overwhelmed him with a level of punch variety he had not encountered before.

Liverpool’s McGrail was an outstanding amateur and won medals at the European Championships, Commonwealth Games and World Amateur Championships, but he has made a flawless start to life as a professional and this win takes him to 3-0.

The 25-year-old drew blood from the nose of his opponent in round two as he turned on the style for the fans in the Middle East and after the beleaguered Ionita slumped on his chair, it was decided he felt the force of McGrail’s punches for long enough.

McGrail is next scheduled to fight in Liverpool, on April 22 as part of a massive bill which is headlined by Paul Butler’s world title fight with John Riel Casimero, and he wants a step up in rounds and class of opponent.

“I’m looking for an eight round fight next and I want a tougher opponent too,” said super-bantamweight McGrail.

“But I trust my team at Probellum and Richard Schaefer to deliver me the right fights at the right time,

“It is not a matter of if, but a matter of when I reach the very top.”

Ireland’s former super-bantamweight world champion TJ Doheny produced a punch-perfect performance to stop Mexican rival Cesar Juarez in less than two rounds.

Doheny, 35, was sharp and accurate from the first bell and floored Juarez with a wonderfully timed left hook from the southpaw stance.

Juarez got to his feet but Doheny pounced and having connected with several more clean shots, the referee stepped in between the fighters and brought an end to the scheduled 10 rounder at 2:23 of the second session.

Doheny, who is now 23-3 as a pro, was thrilled with his performance.

“It feels great and I am very happy to be getting the stoppage, “ Doheny, nicknamed ‘The Power’, said.

“I felt every shot I hit him with, not just the left hook that floored him, and I knew I was breaking him down.

“I’m buzzing and I want more rounds!”

Probellum star Shabaz Masound, who stopped Yoann Boyeux on the opening night of Probellum Evolution, said he would relish a crack at Doheny.

“I would love that fight him, he’s a former world champion and I would fancy my chances,” said the 10-0 man from Stoke-on-Trent.

Sunny Edwards and Muhammad Waseem shared an intense face-off ahead of their IBF world flyweight title fight tomorrow night.

Both fighters came inside the 8st limit when they tipped the scales on the stage at the Irish Village in Dubai.

Edwards and Waseem’s hotly anticipated clash headlines the second night of Probellum Evolution, with the WBC super-lightweight title final eliminator between Regis Prograis and Tyrone McKenna acting as the co-main event.

Liverpool’s Peter McGrail, a supremely gifted amateur who is unbeaten as a professional, also fights on the impressive card, which includes TJ Doheny, Hovhannes Bachkov and many others.

Boxing starts at 5:35pm local time with the action from a major night of boxing being broadcast by Eurosport’s linear channels discovery+ and Eurosport App, to 62 million homes across Europe and the Indian sub-continent.

fuboTV will stream both Probellum Evolution shows to its audience in North America, with ESPN KO showing the cards in South America, after a deal was announced last week.

Top prospect Peter McGrail will make his eagerly awaited Probellum debut next month after becoming the latest high-profile name added to Probellum Evolution, which takes place on consecutive nights in Dubai.

McGrail (2-0, 1 knockout), 25, recently signed to Probellum alongside his younger brother, 19-year-old Joe, and the skilful featherweight will be in action for the first time since late last year, when he competes on the second night of Probellum’s upcoming Dubai double-header, on Saturday, March 19.

Estelle Mossely will create history the night before when she headlines the Middle East’s first ever female world title fight before Sunny Edwards puts his IBF world flyweight title on the line a day later, as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium hosts a back-to-back boxing bonanza.

One of British boxing’s brightest young talents, Liverpool-born McGrail has enjoyed a strong start to his career in the professional ranks, beating compatriot Ed Harrison on his debut last October before defeating Nicaragua’s Engel Gomez in style, courtesy of a second-round knockout in December.

Prior to turning professional, his career at amateur level was hugely successful, with McGrail representing Team GB at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as well as winning gold medals at both the 2017 European Championships and 2018 Commonwealth Games. McGrail also took home bronze medals from the World Amateur Championships in 2017 and 2019, and is a seven-time national champion.

The Everton Football Club fan is widely considered the stand-out fighter of his generation to hail from the boxing hotbed of Liverpool and is being backed to follow in the footsteps of the city’s celebrated list of former world champions.

McGrail has already boxed to huge support and acclaim in this opening two pro bouts – which were both in his hometown – but is now determined to display his dazzling skills in Dubai next month.

“I’m really looking forward to competing as a Probellum fighter for the first time in Dubai,” said McGrail, who trains at the highly regarded Everton Red Triangle Boxing Club.

“This is Probellum’s first event of the year, featuring some brilliant fighters, and I’m absolutely delighted to be added to the card. I’ve never fought in the Middle East so it will be a great experience for me.

“The fight is just over a month away and my training camp has been going very well so far. I’m fully focused on being in the best possible condition to show what I can do when the event comes around and I hope the Brits in Dubai will come out to support me on the night.”

Probellum is delighted to announce the promotional signings of hugely talented brothers Peter and Joe McGrail.

The Liverpool-born duo enjoyed great success on the amateur stage with older brother Peter a seven-time national champion and gold medalist at both the 2017 European Championships and 2018 Commonwealth Games, while also competing for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics last summer.

Joe, 19, was also a standout performer at amateur level, competing in 64 bouts and becoming a National ABA champion.

As a professional, after beating compatriot Ed Harrison on his professional debut last October, 25-year-old Peter (2-0, 1 knockout) secured a second-round knockout victory over Engel Gomez, from Nicaragua, in December on the Conor Benn versus Chris Algieri undercard.

That night proved particularly memorable for the brothers as Peter was joined on the card by Joe (1-0, 1 knockout), who produced a brilliant performance on his professional debut to overcome the challenge of Spaniard Francisco Rodriguez.

The pair train at the Everton Red Triangle Boxing Club under the tutelage of highly respected coach, Paul Stevenson.

“This is a huge moment for our family and I’m over the moon to sign with Probellum, particularly alongside my younger brother,” said Peter.

“It’s been a positive start to my professional career, with two solid victories, and with Probellum behind me, I fully expect my all-round performance to improve significantly in the future as I broaden my experience.”

“Having only competed in my first professional fight at the end of last year, this is a very important time in terms of my development, and I believe this move will be hugely beneficial in the long-term.

“It’s a bit chilly here compared to Las Vegas, we’re on one hell of a run, of course in Madison Square Garden just a couple of weeks ago – we saw a fight of the year contender between Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr. Last week we were at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for another great fight between Devin Haney and JoJo Diaz Jr.

“We’re in Liverpool for a tremendous fight card, a double header with Conor Benn and Katie Taylor. We’re expecting around 7,000 at the M&S Bank Arena, a great city and we can’t wait to be back on Saturday night.”

Conor Benn:

“I know Algieri’s a test, he’s a step up, he said I haven’t been tested but it’s getting a bit boring saying I haven’t been tested. Every fight moving forward for me is potentially going to be a test, Formella said exactly the same thing, so did Vargas. You don’t get ranked top five in the WBC, WBA, ranked in the IBF and WBO for nothing. I plan on passing these tests with flying colours and that’s exactly what I do.

“I know Algieri’s going to come in there to win, I’ll exploit his mistakes as well because I see holes in his armour. I’m just ready to fight man, I always get like this during fight week, get intense and animated – ready to go. I want to get in there Saturday night and iron someone out.

“Algieri is a better version of all my last opponents, and he beats everything they do in my opinion in terms of boxing IQ, cuteness, knowing his way around the ring. People say he can’t punch but anyone with 8oz gloves can punch. I’m well prepared, I’m not concerned about what he brings to the table because I know what I can do.

“Algieri is going to come, he’s going to throw and try to win, which him and his team believe he can. I’ll exploit holes in his armour, he’s up against a young lion, up against someone who’s on the come up. Every single camp I go in to I give it 100%, I level up every single time and can only beat who you put in front of me, and I will deal with them. Not only do I beat them, but I learn, school’s never out.

“I had to show a lot of grit and determination of overlooking an opponent early on in my career, I know now never to do that. When someone asks me about other fights, I don’t entertain the thought, at the end of the day none of them materialise if I don’t get through Algieri. Once I get through him, and I believe I will, then the doors can open.”

Chris Algieri:

“Training camp has gone great, I feel great and got in here early, we’ve all adjusted very well to the time zone. We’re happy to be here, I know a lot of European fighters are enamoured in fighting in the States, but a lot of us are enamoured about fighting here because of the fan base here in Europe and in the UK – the UK fans are some of the best in the world. The opportunity to be here and fight in front of those crowds is a big feather in the cap for me in my career.

“I’m excited for fight night, it’s going to be electric, I think we have the opportunity to put on a fantastic fight. You [Eddie] mentioned Lopez vs. Kambosos as potential fight of the year, I think this fight will potentially be a rival to that in terms of a style match-up and what I bring to the table. I think this is going to be a fantastic fight and everybody should tune in.

“I’ve been around this game a long time and I’ve been in with the elite of the elite, I’ve been on both sides of the table. At the end of the day, skills pay the bills and experience kills, so we’re coming in here with our experience, our skills, and we’re going to utilise that plan to find a victory.

“I’m in fantastic shape, fight week is a lot longer when you don’t have to worry about the weight. I’m just raring to go, I just can’t wait for fight night, I still feel like it’s far away. The weight has been a bit of a blessing.”

Katie Taylor:

“I’m very aware of the challenge on Saturday night, I haven’t overlooked Sharipova at all, I know what she brings, and I’m prepared for whatever comes my way Saturday night. I’m also aware that there’s so many big fights out there for me, the bigger names that could possibly happen next year, so I’ve got to get through Saturday night first and focus on the bigger fights ahead.

“You’ve seen so many upsets so far this year in the boxing world when people have maybe gone into the ring underprepared or overlooking certain opponents. I know that obviously can’t happen, I’ve made that mistake before as an amateur fighter where I have overlooked opponents – being beaten and learning the hard way. I’m 100% prepared and focused coming into the fight, I’m ready to put on a big performance.

“I can’t wait, this is such an amazing card with so many packed fights, it’s going to be an amazing atmosphere and an amazing night – full of so many Irish people travelling over for the fight. It’s going to be a loud arena so I can’t wait to get in there and perform.”

Firuza Sharipova:

“I feel very confident and welcomed here in this city, I have a great respect for Katie Taylor. She’s been my idol all the time but I’m coming here to win.

“I was preparing well, thanks to my team for their support and I’m ready for the fight on Saturday night.”

Robbie Davies Jr:

“It’s a great fight for me to come back to definitely, Hank’s been in with some of the top names in the division. In Liverpool fighting is embedded in us so I won’t be shying away from anything he brings to the table. I’ve been working hard in the gym and I’m ready to go on Saturday night.

“There’s definitely a big team bonding in the gym, Shane has had a lot of belief in me since I started, picking out a few things we need to change. Each step forward now we’ll showcase a little bit more of what we’re working on in the gym with Shane – Saturday night is going to be the start of it, and we’ll push on for a big 2022.

“This is a must win for me, the Lewis Ritson defeat didn’t go my way, it was a bit disappointing. When I fought the Mexican kid, everyone watching seen what went on, but I’m a much better fighter since being with Shane. It’s given me a belief back in myself and I’ll show that Saturday night.”

Henry Lundy:

“We’ve been training hard, preparing for this fight, we’re ready to get this title.

“After that fight fell out, we went back home and stayed in the gym, stayed ready. We always stay ready to fight man, you show up and be prepared and ready to fight – that’s what we do.

“This is going to be a great fight; it’s going to be war. I will be victorious.”

Joe Cordina:

“I can never overlook anybody, I’ve got Miko on Saturday so he’s my focus at the minute. I’ve never been shy to make clear that being a World Champion is what I want and that’s where I want to be. First thing’s first, I’ve got Saturday to deal with.

“My performance wasn’t the best at Fight Camp, I felt comfortable and didn’t get out of second gear and I still got the win. I was out for eighteen months and when I got back in the gym I worked on a lot of things and took it into the fight. All I want to do this fight is building on my last camp, building on that performance, and getting a similar result.”

Miko Khatchatryan:

“This is a great opportunity for me, it’s a last-minute fight but I’m in great shape and ready to make a good fight on Saturday night.”

Peter McGrail:

“It’s good times, obviously fight number one was a belter, belter card in Liverpool. You’ve [Eddie] brought another belter card to Liverpool, got me and Joe on it, I’ve trained alongside French and Cordina, I know Robbie Davies, watching Benn and Taylor for years. Boxing on a card alongside these is a privilege and I’m looking forward to Saturday.

“The experience of the first fight will be with me for life, probably won’t get anything like that until I’m fighting for titles. It’s good to get that on my debut, I’ve got that under my belt, a good six rounds and the first of my professional career. I’m looking forward to performing on Saturday, keep the ball rolling and pushing on for a big 2022.”

Caoimhin Agyarko:

“It’s a great opportunity to showcase myself on this platform and what an honour it is to fight on Katie Taylor and Conor Benn’s undercard. I’ve had the privilege of being in training camps with Katie so fighting on her card means so much to me. I’ve got 150 crazy Irish fans coming over for Saturday night so it’ll feel like, I can’t wait to get in there and put on an explosive performance.

“I want to be in the best fights possible and in the past, it has been hard to match me. I’ve got an unbeaten fighter in front of me on Saturday night, so I look forward to getting past that test, being in some fights next year and going back to Belfast and headlining a show there – putting my name in the Middleweight division.”

Noe Larios Jr:

“I’m happy to be here, I feel blessed, I’m super stoked to have this opportunity. I’m just here to do my job on Saturday and get the job done. I’m happy to be part of this undercard.

Paddy Lacey:

“I’m lucky to be here and to be in this situation. Five years ago, I was playing professional football looking upwards of getting to the Premier League and then some. If you’ve followed me recently, you’ll see what the story is and the what the journey has been.”

“I’ve got quite a big following, I think it’s relatable to loads of people in Liverpool, we’ve all made mistakes and I’m just trying to build myself back up – not in football anymore but in boxing. Hopefully the support continues, and I can climb up these rankings and do something in boxing.

“People used to snigger when I was boxing and playing football but in my 17 amateur fights I snoozed half of them – I was knocking out everybody in the amateurs. If people will comment and look down, they’ll find out when they fight me.”

Jordan Gill:

“I’m glad to be still fighting, thanks for having me on the card, I was absolutely gutted when Guerfi pulled out, I thought this was going to be the weekend I won that European Title and push on. This is boxing and these things happen, it’s been delayed, and I look forward to a good fight on Saturday.

“I was miserable for about an hour, horrible to be around and upset, but you have to get out of bed in the morning and push on. I’ve stayed in the gym all year, I feel like I’ve been mandatory for this title for ages so I’m looking forward to getting the win on Saturday night, looking good for the fans who have travelled and pushing on for the European Title.

“It’s a great division and I’m glad to be a part of it, I feel like getting Saturday out of the way, win a European Title and my name’s well and truly in the mix. If I get a final eliminator or a defence of the title, maybe even a straight World Title shot next year, let’s go for it and push on – I want these big fights.”

Calum French:

“I’ve been boxing in these sports halls, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, all over the world over the past five years, it’s going to be nice to come out and box in front of all my friends and family in a big stadium like the M&S Bank Arena.

“Hopefully I can take that amateur experience into the pro game, I had a few WSB fights for the five rounds distance so I can hopefully take that experience into the professional ranks and be Matchroom’s next star.”

Joe McGrail:

Gill challenges Guerfi for European Featherweight Title

Katie Taylor will defend her WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine Lightweight crowns against WBA Mandatory Challenger Firuza Sharipova on the same night that Welterweight star Conor Benn steps up against former World Champion Chris Algieri at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool on Saturday December 11, live worldwide on DAZN.

Irish sensation Taylor (19-0, 6 KOs) is within touching distance of a huge showdown with Amanda Serrano in 2022 but must overcome a final hurdle in the shape of Kazakhstan’s Sharipova after cruising to another successful defence of her titles against the USA’s Jennifer Han at Emerald Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

Sharipova (14-1, 8 KOs) has picked up titles at Super-Featherweight, Lightweight and Super-Lightweight since joining the professional ranks in May 2016, and the 27-year-old from Taraz is ranked at No.1 in the world at Lightweight by the WBA having remained undefeated since a shock four-round points loss on her debut.

Chatteris Featherweight talent Jordan Gill (26-1, 7 KOs) returns to the ring to challenge EBU European Featherweight Champion Karim Guerfi (30-5, 9 KOs) after scoring behind closed doors wins over Reece Bellotti in August 2020 and Cesar Juarez in February 2021 to land the WBA International Title.

France’s Guerfi became a two-weight European Champion by outpointing Andoni Gago in Marbella, Spain earlier this year to land the 126lbs strap. The 34-year-old from Manosque previously held the EBU Bantamweight Title before losing it to undefeated Scottish talent Lee McGregor at the Bolton Whites Hotel in March.

‘The Welsh Wizard’ Joe Cordina (13-0, 8 KOs) continues his push for Super-Featherweight World Title action in 2020 after scoring a sensational first round knockout win over the USA’s Joshuah Hernandez at Fight Camp in August, former European, British and Commonwealth Super-Lightweight Champion Robbie Davies Jr (21-3, 14 KOs) fights for the second time under new trainer Shane McGuigan, undefeated Belfast Middleweight talent Caoimhin Agyarko (9-0, 6 KOs) makes his Matchroom debut, former Team GB star Calum French makes his professional debut at Super-Lightweight, Tokyo Olympian Peter McGrail (1-0) steps though the ropes for the seconds time as a pro and is joined on the bill by his debutant brother Joe McGrail, while former professional footballer Paddy Lacey (1-0) looks to build on his pro debut win over Stanko Jermelic last month.

“I’m looking forward to ending the year on a high with another defence of my titles,” said Taylor. “I know there are some huge fights out there for me in 2022 but for now my sole focus is on December 11 and this mandatory defence against Sharipova.”

World Boxing Association International Super Welter Title

Liam Smith claimed bragging rights in Liverpool as he stopped Anthony Fowler in round eight of their super-welterweight showdown.

The two men were going head to head at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, on a Matchroom Boxing event that was broadcast live on DAZN.

After a tough opening round, Smith (30-3-1, 17 KOs) began to dominate proceedings and it looked like it could have been over when he dropped Fowler (15-2, 12 KOs) in round five.

Fowler showed toughness to get up, but Smith continued to dictate how the fight went, and after dropping Fowler again in round eight, the referee waved it off and Smith came out on top in the local derby.

Smith said: “It was a great fight and I knew it would be competitive, especially for the first six rounds. He’s a quality fighter when he’s fresh, but I said all along about experience. I feel I’ve got a good enough chin at this level as I’ve been hit by bigger punchers.

“I started slow, but then I did a good job after that. I thought it was over in the fifth, so he did well getting up. I let him off the hook a bit in the next round too.

“I had to make it personal on my own behalf, as if I lost I was finished, so I had to do something to switch it on. Hopefully we can make the Jesse Vargas fight now. Thank you to everyone who came out, it was a night I’ll never forget.”

Troy Williamson W TKO 10 Ted Cheeseman

British Super Welterweight Title

Troy Williamson (17-0-1, 13 KOs) won the British super-welterweight title after a sensational battle against Ted Cheeseman (17-3-1, 10 KOs).

The two men produced one of the best fights of the year, with it going back and forth as they each gave absolutely everything. Williamson managed to end the fight in devastating fashion, landing a massive shot in round 10 that send Cheeseman to the canvas.

The referee waved the fight off immediately, handing Williamson the win and in the process crowning him the new British super-welterweight champion.

Williamson said: “It was a very tough fight. We knew how tough it would be. I came up the hard way, and now I’m here everybody knows what I’m all about.

“Cheeseman was saying to me at the weigh-in that 12 rounds was a long time and that it gets tough after eight, well I showed everybody how tough I am.

“I want to dedicate this win to my trainer. He has an amateur club as well and does it all by himself. He had two fighters get to the finals of the Junior ABAs the other day, and now I’ve won him the British title.”

Fight Notes: The bout went the 6 round distance with McGrail winning every round on the judges scorecard. The score was 60-54. With the result, McGrail won on his professional debut after a stellar amateur career.

American Jamie “The Miracle” Mitchell left no doubt about her ambitions and became the new World Boxing Association 118-pound bantamweight champion. Mitchell defeated local Shannon Courtenay in Liverpool, England after a majority decision by the judges.

The bantamweight title was vacant when Courtenay lost it on the scale and pursuant WBA rules should she had won the fight, she would no be declared champion. However, Mitchell did a good job in the ring to win the crown.

She is called “The Miracle” in reference to a hard life story that accompanies her existence. She follows the guidance of former boxer Dewey Cooper at the Mayweather Gym after an becoming an amateur star.

Mitchell made a great fight against a tenacious boxer like Courtenay who carried the weight of a right leg injury plus the weigh-in episode. Two aspects that psychologically can affect an athlete’s performance but Courtenay showed passion by not giving in during the difficult test against Mitchell.

With an outstanding style and physical condition, the Californian completed her ninth fight to remain undefeated and also managed to win the black and gold bantamweight belt of the pioneer organization.

Fight News: The bout went the 10 round distance with Conway winning a unanimous decision with the judges. The judges scorecards read 96-94, 96-95, 96-95.

Elsewhere on the card, Blane Hyland (5-1) secured another comfortable win, defeating Santiago San Eusebio 39-37 on points after four rounds.

Peter McGrail says he couldn’t have wished for a better platform to make his professional debut on as he prepares to battle Ed Harrison in a six-round Super-Bantamweight contest on the undercard of Liam Smith vs. Anthony Fowler at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool this Saturday October 9, live worldwide on DAZN.

One of Merseyside’s most decorated amateur boxers, McGrail first broke through with bronze medals at the Youth Olympics and World Youth Championships back in 2014. The gifted southpaw then won gold at the European Championships in Kharkiv in 2017 before winning Commonwealth gold a year later in Australia.

The 25-year-old Liverpudlian, who trains out of the renowned Everton Red Triangle Gym on Albion Street under Paul Stevenson, was hotly-tipped for a Featherweight medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games but succumbed to a premature defeat against Thai fighter Chatchai-decha Butdee in the opening round.

“I won seven National Titles growing up,” said McGrail. “I went to the Youth Worlds and got a bronze. Then I qualified for the Youth Olympics and got a bronze. It was after that I joined Team GB. My best achievement was when I won the Europeans fighting a Ukrainian in Ukraine in the final. I knew if I won that I was the first ever Scouser.

“You’ve seen the Scousers that have come out of this city. For me to win that and be the first ever Scouser was boss for my family. It was boss for me and boss for the gym. I needed the Olympic medal, but it wasn’t to be. I’m still proud of my career. It was sad but it was exciting at the same time because I knew it was time for the new chapter to begin which I’ve been waiting for for years.

“I’m a proud Scouser, whenever there’s a Scouser fighting I’m always rooting for them. The likes of Tony Bellew and Callum Smith – former World Champions. Everyone in our gym, we’re all looking to follow in their footsteps. I love Liverpool. I trained down in Sheffield for years but I always used to miss home. When I’d come home I was always a bit happier.

“I can’t ask for a better debut. It’s not just a little show in Liverpool, it’s a proper heavy bill. It’s a naughty main event. I’m looking forward to it. I want to become a World Champion. I want to bring big nights to Liverpool. I want to make my mum, my dad and my family proud, and hopefully make loads of money as well. I’m going to be pushing on to bigger and better things.”
