Boxen247.com Amateur Boxing 2022 AMBC Elite Championship, Beatriz Ferreira, Jajaira Gonzalez, Jennifer Lozano, Rashida Ellis, Rebeca Santos, Tatiana Flores 0
Jajaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) and Jennifer Lozano (Laredo, Texas) closed out their 2022 AMBC Elite Championship run on top of the medal podium, while Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) came away with a silver medal for Team USA in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Lozano, who was making her international debut at these championships, as well as boxed in a new weight class, once again put on an impressive performance to take all five judges’ cards over Argentina’s Tatiana Flores Milagros. Four of the five judges scored the bout 29-28, while the final judge gave all three rounds to the American. Lozano defeated Colombia’s Liliana Murillo Deicy (5-0), as well as Genesis Gomez of Ecuador (RSC), in route to her gold medal victory.
Gonzalez closed out the day for Team USA by coming back from a standing eight count in the first round, which appeared to be more of a slip than from a punch, to take the 4-1 decision over Brazil’s Rebeca Santos. The three-time World Champion and Youth Olympic Champion took victories over Argentina’s Beatriz Viviana (4-1) and Colombia’s Angie Pana (3-2) in her other two bouts of these championships. This marked her first international tournament since taking part in the USA vs. Canada duels back in 2018.
The final member of Team USA to step into the ring yesterday, Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.), finally got her opportunity to box after receiving a bye in the first round that was followed by a walkover win to advance to the finals against 2020 Olympic silver medalist Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil. Ellis was up 4-1 following the first round, however, could not continue to hold on to the victory in the judges’ eyes, falling short, 4-1, at the conclusion of the bout.
All three females join bronze medalists Kayla Gomez (El Paso, Texas) and Amelia Moore (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to contribute to five of Team USA’s 13 total medals.
Competition will conclude today with the men’s championship bouts, where the Americans will have six boxers go for gold.
Women’s Finals Results
50 kg: Jennifer Lozano, Laredo, Texas/USA, dec. over Tatiana Flores Milagros/ARG, 5-0
60 kg: Beatriz Ferreira/BRA dec. over Rashida Ellis, Lynn, Mass./USA, 4-1
63 kg: Jajaira Gonzalez, Glendora, Calif./USA, dec. over Rebeca Santos/BRA, 4-1

Boxen247.com Amateur Boxing Aidan Walsh, Ben Whittaker, Bobo-Usmon Baturov, Caroline Dubois, Keno Machado, Pat McCormack, Rashida Ellis, Sudaporn Seesondee, Team GB, Tokyo 2020 0
Pat McCormack and Ben Whittaker guaranteed themselves at least Olympic bronze medals on a fantastic day seven for GB Boxing at Tokyo 2020.
Both boxers won their quarter-final bouts as Caroline Dubois also won her last 16 clash to move within one bout of clinching a medal of her own.
Number one seed McCormack faced a physical encounter as he took on Bobo-Usmon Baturov of Uzbekistan.
The welterweight (Under 69kg) was consistently the better man at long range and picked some eye-catching shots to edge the opening round 3-2.
He stepped up his performance in the second round with some excellent work on the counter and was duly rewarded with a clean sweep on the judges’ scorecards.
The Birtley boxer suffered a cut to the eye in the third round after a clash of heads but nevertheless kept his composure to win the round 3-2 and secure and overall 4-1 verdict.
He saluted victory by raising his arms in triumph at his GB team-mates and support staff watching in the stands.
The North Easterner will now face Ireland’s Aidan Walsh at the semi-final stage on Sunday at 12.5pm (4.50am UK time).
For Firewalker’s Whittaker, his light heavyweight (Under 81kg) bout against Brazil’s Keno Machado was in the balance until the very end.
The West Midlander gave himself an early boost by taking the opening round 3-2, but his opponent hit back in the second to win by the same margin and leave the contest up for grabs.
The third round remained hard-fought but Whittaker managed to land a couple of key blows to sway the judges in his favour 3-2, meaning an overall 3-2 victory.
Whittaker roared his delight at the decision and said after his win: “I want to go back with a gold medal and I want to become the Mayor of Wolverhampton with one of those chains around my neck!
“I said earlier in the week that a bronze and silver mean nothing, and I still truly mean that, but when the decision came (to win the bronze), I let out a bit of a roar and I did my celebration. It hit me what I’d done.
“All the times I’ve been in the gym and boxed with other Olympians and they tell you their story and you think they are lying (about what it means), but when it hits you it’s a weird, weird feeling.”
Whittaker will now take on ROC boxer Imam Khataev ROC on Sunday at 12.50pm (4.50am UK time).
For Dubois, it was another remarkable step on an incredible journey for the 20-year-old, who was still boxing in (and winning) the England Boxing National Youth Championships in 2019.
Taking on the USA’s Rashida Ellis in the last 16, the lightweight (Under 60kg) belied her lack of experience with another assured display.
The Repton boxer took the opening round on a 3-2 split, but it was her 4-1 verdict in the second round that was to ultimately prove decisive.
Ellis came back hard in the third round to reverse the second round scores, but the referee’s deduction of a point for the American saw Dubois prevail 3-0, with the other two scorecards being tied at 28-28.
She now advances to face Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee on Tuesday at 12.50pm (4.50am UK time).

Boxen247.com Amateur Boxing Ben Whittaker, Bobo-Usmon Baturov, Caroline Dubois, Charley Davison, Frazer Clarke, Mourad Aliev, Pat McCormack, Rashida Ellis, Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Tsotne Rogava, Yuang Chang 0
GB Boxing’s Frazer Clarke claimed a quarter-final berth in the super heavyweight category on day six at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics – but Charley Davison bowed out at the last 16 stage.
Burton’s Clarke’s progression came courtesy of a confident display in a 4-1 points triumph over Ukraine’s Tsotne Rogava.
The GB team captain had been made to wait for his first Olympic bout and was the last of the 11-strong British squad to get underway at Tokyo.
And though he was a little slow out of the blocks, he quickly got into his stride to secure the opening round 4-1.
Rogava upped his work rate in the second round, but it was Clarke who continued to land the cleaner shots, meaning the judges scored it exactly the same way as the first.
Protecting a healthy advantage going into the third round, the Burton boxer used all his experience and ring craft to ensure he saw out the remainder of the bout with few problems.
In fact, he did more than that, winning the final round unanimously and the overall contest in the process.
Next up for the 29-year old is a bout with Mourad Aliev, the Frenchman who beat him in the final at the European Qualifying tournament.
Davison, meanwhile, was always facing a difficult task as she took on Chinese number two seed Yuang Chang.
The Attleborough boxer’s bid for victory was made all the tougher as she dropped the opening round unanimously.
The second round was a closer affair, but Chang was nevertheless adjudged to have taken it on four of the five judges’ scorecards.
To her credit, mum-of-three Davison – who came back from a seven year absence from the sport to claim a comeback England Boxing National Amateur Championships title in 2019 – never gave up and was rewarded by getting the nod 3-2 in the final round, but it was not enough to prevent her opponent clinching a unanimous win.
“I didn’t perform to the best of my abilities and the nerves got the better of me,” said a disappointed Davison. “But I’d like to thank all the support I’ve had from back home… they’ve done me proud.”
Tomorrow (Friday), three Great Britain boxers are in action, with both males competing for the semi-final place that would guarantee them a medal.
Repton lightweight Caroline Dubois (Repton) takes on the USA’s Rashida Ellis at 11.30am (3.30am UK time), Birtley welterweight Pat McCormack faces off against Bobo-Usmon Baturov of Uzbekistan UZB at 12.30pm (4.30am UK time) and Firewalker light heavyweight Ben Whittaker at 1.20pm (5.20am UK time).

Boxen247.com Amateur Boxing Abdelrahman Salah Orabi, Aliaksandr Radzionau, Ben Whittaker, Bobo-Usmon Baturov, Cheavon Clarke, Gravesham’s Clarke, Karriss Artingstall, Lauren Price, Myagmarjargal Munkhbat, Pat McCormack, Rashida Ellis, Skye Nicolson, Team GB, Tokyo 2020 Olympics 0
Pat McCormack and Caroline Dubois secured victories as Cheavon Clarke bowed out on a mixed day four of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for Great Britain’s boxers.
It was Birtley’s McCormack who got the ball rolling in the morning session against Aliaksandr Radzionau, showing no signs of rustiness or nerves in his last 16 contest, having been given a bye in the opening round of the tournament.
He displayed his usual slick footwork and counter punching prowess to nullify the threat of Belarus’ Aliaksandr Radzionau, winning the opening round in the opinion of four of the five judges.
The number one seed took further command in the second round and continued to display the sharper work in the third to take both unanimously.
The North Easterner – who took a silver medal at the World Championships in 2019 and then won the European Qualifying tournament for Tokyo 2020 – can now look forward to a meeting with Bobo-Usmon Baturov of Uzbekistan, where they will box for a semi-final place.
That bout will take place at approximately 12.30pm (4.30am UK time) on Friday.
Caroline Dubois picked up where McCormack had left off as she too secured a clean sweep of verdicts from the judges and a unanimous verdict with it.
The Repton southpaw found her range almost immediately and made her opponent miss before punishing her on the counter to take the opening round across the board.
The Kosovan stepped up the tempo in the second round, but Dubois remained unflustered and picked her shots well to claim another clean sweep.
And it was more of the same in the third round, with the Londoner able to cope with anything that Sadiku could throw at her to win 30-27 on all five scorecards.
Dubois will now face Rashida Ellis of the USA on Friday at approximately 11.30am (3.30am UK time).
But it was not to be three out of three for GB, with Gravesham’s Clarke coming out on the wrong end of a spilt in his bout with Brazil’s Abner Teixeira, which was closer than the 4-1 score line suggested.
Clarke edged the first round of a thrilling bout 3-2, while the second went 4-1 to the South American, leaving all to play for in the decisive third round.
But it was Teixeira who was adjudged to have finished the stronger, edging the final three minutes 3-2 and clinching the contest in his favour.
Tomorrow (Wednesday), Karriss Artingstall takes on Australia’s Skye Nicolson in a featherweight quarter-final at approx 5pm (9am UK time), Lauren Price faces Mongolia’s Myagmarjargal Munkhbat in a middleweight last 16 bout at approx 11.30am (3.30am UK Time) and Ben Whittaker boxes Abdelrahman Salah Orabi in the last 16 at approximately 2.25pm (6.25am UK time).
