Scotland has a new undisputed champion. Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor outlasted Jose Ramirez in an instant classic, notching a unanimous decision (114-112 3x) to capture the junior welterweight title. With the win, Taylor becomes the sixth male undisputed champion of the four-belt era, and the first from Scotland to do so.

After the bout, Taylor said, “I’m ecstatic. I’ve trained my whole life for this. I’ve dedicated my whole life for this moment. I’ve dreamt of it so many times over, man. I’m so, so happy. I’m over the moon. I’ve trained for this moment all my life.

“I’ve got nothing but love for Ramirez. This week was no disrespect. It was all part of the mind games to get in his head, to make him more eager to jump in at me and be more aggressive, to use his aggression against him.

“I thought the scorecards were a little tight. I thought they were well wider than that. I wasn’t too happy with the selection of the judges, but I wasn’t going to moan. I was confident in winning this fight anyway.”

Ramirez commented after the bout, “He took advantage of some of those clinches but, hey, I got back up and tried to give it my best and stay smart. I was never hurt. I was aware. I was just disappointed every time it happened. I tried to shake it off and get back to my rhythm. But it was overall a good fight. Hopefully, I get back and I learn from my mistakes. You win some and you lose some.

“I felt like I landed some clean shots. It came down to the clinches. He would let his hands go as soon as he got his chance and I think I left it to the referee to do his part and it was a lack of experience on my part.”

Ramirez, who had been world champion since March 2018, invested in the body in the early going, but Taylor (18-0, 13 KOs) was equal to the task in the trenches.

The tide turned in the sixth round when Taylor nailed Ramirez with a straight left hand as Ramirez lunged forward. In the seventh, an uppercut planted Ramirez to the canvas. Ramirez (26-1, 17 KOs) nearly dug himself out of the hole, sweeping the last four rounds on one scorecard and winning three of the last four on the other two.

This Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada, Josh Taylor, of Prestonpans, Scotland, remained undefeated (18-0, 13 KOs) and handed José Carlos Ramírez (26-1, 17 KOs) his first loss since the Olympic Games in Summer 2012 in London.

Taylor, 30, also retained his IBF and WBA belts and won the WBC and WBO crowns from Ramirez, 28, of Avenal, California.

The victory also cemented Taylor as the fifth unified champion in any division during boxing’s four-belt era. He joins the elite band , alongside former middleweight champions Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor, former junior welterweight champion Terence Crawford and former cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

The difference was the Tartan tattoo, involving two knockdowns in the sixth and the seventh, both at close range. Ramirez walked into the first one, purposefully advancing, to be caught with a jarring straight left counterpunch. His momentum as much as the punch propelled plus pitched him forward and downward. to the canvass, in his own corner.

The second knockdown involved a technical lapse on the part of Ramirez. There had been some robust exchanges during clinches and in this one, he dropped his hands as he moved to back away. The mistake was instantly punished with a pinpoint left uppercut, which dropped him much harder. He again got up and Taylor went to work, but he resisted everything and fought back valiantly.

After the midway point, Ramirez`s right brow was swelling a greyish blue, with his corner soothing it will with the flat iron, to stop it closing. He came back strongly in the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth rounds to narrow the gap, which was always going to be defined by those two visits to the canvass. He`d cut Taylor over the left eye in the fifth with some sharp marksmanship.

With what was at stake, the bout remained tense and heated throughout. Referee Kenny Bayless briefly stopped the action in the eighth, to tell both to stop being lippy, and cut out the choice as well as ripe, loquacious chit chat, so as to focus their simmering energy on two way exchanges of a more hands on manner.

Judges Tim Cheatham, Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld scored their fight 114-112 in favor of the Scot.

“I have nothing but respect for Ramirez. I want to say that everything that happened in the week was not disrespectful. It was all part of the mental game and the fight plan that we had for tonight,” Taylor told ESPN afterwards of his victory.

Gracious, noble and classy, following his first pro defeat, Jose Carlos thanked and waved to his supporters, who cheered him loud and long, as there`s no shame in falling short, when you`ve given your absolute all. He`ll be back!

Josh Taylor made history as he defeated Jose Ramirez to become the undisputed super-lightweight champion.

He was crowned the undisputed super lightweight world champion last night in a dogged battle that kept up to all the high expectations beforehand. Jose Ramirez was sent to the ground twice which made a difference in the direction of the fight as well as the end result with the scoring.

Tensions were high in the run-up to the unification fight for supremacy in the super lightweight division, which took place last night in the Theater of the Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. The encounter between the two undefeated world champions promised a world-class match on equal terms and as the fight unfolded, this was proven over the twelve hard fought rounds. Josh Taylor (18-0, 13 KOs) and Jose Ramirez (26-1, 17 KOs) beforehand traded verbal duels and a ‘scuffle’ in the hotel hallway during fight week. In the ring, both boxers gave their all and did not back-off in the the expected class bout. After twelve hard fought rounds, the judges unanimously scored Josh Taylor as the winner.

Ramirez started fast and the different tactics became clear right from the start. WBC and WBO champion Ramirez fought from a compact stance and initially looked the stronger fighter. He tried to exert himself on Taylor in order to fire combinations whilst Taylor worked a lot with the lead right hand and took aim at the body of his opponent early on in the fight. Taylor was able to control the distance, standing tall and fighting his fight well in the first two rounds. 28-year-old Ramirez increased the pressure from the third round which developed into an intense battle with both boxers having their moments. Taylor, trained by Ben Davison, was particularly good at long distance. In close range, Ramirez was able to counter with powerful combinations and seemed to be bossing the fight up to that point.

In the sixth round, the bout took a dramatic turn. Ten seconds into the round, Taylor let his hands go and connected with Ramirez’s chin that sent him to the canvas with a left cross. Ramirez initially recovered well, but made another mistake in his concentration in the next round. Following a clinch, he neglected his guard and was punished by Taylor with a severe left uppercut which put him on the canvas again, this time harder. Kenny Bayless administered the count but this time, Ramirez didn’t seem the same and was hurt.

It was not until the ninth round that Robert Garcia’s protégé shook off the effects of the second knockdown, but was finally back into the fight. The “Tartan Tornado” acted very controlled with his boxing and by this point, and with the two knockdowns in his favour, he was able to bring his advantages in speed again and again, with repeated heavy punches in a controlled and non desperate manor.

In the last two rounds, Ramirez once again revealed his great fighting spirit as he pressed, realising that he may be behind on the scorecards. Taylor checked the time of the last rounds as if to cruise to the end with his lead in place. This could of been costly as it was no forgone conclusion that he was ahead, and especially as the ‘away’ fighter.

After twelve hard fought and pleasing rounds, the judges’ scores were read out. They unanimously scored the bout 114-112 x3, all for Taylor, who can now call himself the undisputed super lightweight world champion after just 18 professional bouts.

Afterwards, both boxers showed class and put aside the previous provocations that fuelled the pre-fight tension. An overjoyed Taylor protested his respect for Ramirez in the post-fight interview and stated that the incidents last week were solely for the purposes of mental games that are common in boxing.

What next for Taylor? After an absorbing fight and torturous training, a good rest I’m sure will be taken by the Scot. Undisputed super lightweight champion of the world….Ken Buchanan will be pleased.

Josh Taylor made history as he defeated Jose Ramirez to become the undisputed super-lightweight champion.

Taylor defeated Ramirez by unanimous decision, to walk away with the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO titles following an incredible battle at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on Saturday.

The Tartan Tornado dominated the majority of the rounds, and scored two massive knockdowns in round six and round seven, with Ramirez only just managing to get back to his feet.

The fight went the distance, with the judges scoring it 114-112, 114-112, 114-112, meaning in just his 18th professional fight Taylor becomes one of the few men in history to become four-belt undisputed champion.

Taylor said: “I’m ecstatic. I’ve trained my whole life for this and dreamt of it so many times over. I’m so happy and over the moon.

“Nothing but love for Ramirez. I meant no disrespect this week. It was just mind games to get him more eager to jump in. We said all week we will use his aggression against him and we got in his head. There is nothing but respect there though, he’s a great champion and an ambassador for the sport.

“The scorecards should have been a bit wider. I wasn’t too happy with the selection of judges but we were still confident of winning the fight. There is a new warrior king on the map and he’s from Scotland!”

Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez both made weight as they prepare for tomorrow night’s highly-anticipated undisputed super-lightweight title clash.

IBF and WBA super-lightweight champion Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) faces WBC and WBO super-lightweight champion Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, and will be broadcast live in the UK on Fite TV and in the USA on ESPN.

The weigh-in took place on Friday, with Taylor coming in at a ripped and ready 139.6lbs, while Ramirez was the identical weight, also coming in at 139.6lbs.

The two men were then involved in an intense face-off, as they prepare to do battle with one another in a massive fight tomorrow evening.

Here are their parting verbal ripostes, before the talking is over… and the action commences:

“I have faced many left-handed fighters in my career. On an amateur and professional level. I have been preparing for this fight all my life! I am very good physically. Jack Catterall has made his prediction ahead of Saturday’s massive undisputed super-lightweight title fight – revealing that he believes Josh Taylor will defeat Jose Ramirez.

Undefeated Catterall is mandatory challenger and is set to face the winner of the fight. He will be ringside to watch the showdown, and he hopes Taylor wins to set up a massive domestic showdown.

Catterall told Queensberry Promotions: “It is a massive fight, hopefully it is a good fight and I can let everyone know I’m serious about fighting the winner.

“I will do some training, sparring and ultimately watch the fight. After the weekend we will have a clear direction of where we’re going.

“I stepped aside on the promise that I will get the winner and I am under no illusion because anything can happen, but ultimately I have allowed them to create this big undisputed title fight. I have beaten everyone in front of me, done everything asked of me on my side.

“I hope Josh wins and hope he is a man of his word. It’s been talked about Taylor having a homecoming fight at Edinburgh Castle and I am bang up for the challenge.

“I could be wrong and I hope I am wrong, but I don’t think Ramirez will give me an opportunity. I think he probably has other plans.

“Taylor has publicly thanked me for stepping aside and allowing this big fight to happen. Hopefully he can get the job done and we can get it on. I have been very patient and it’s been a long time coming, but I will be getting my crack.

“I’ve said it from the start, I think Taylor wins. Ramirez has improved, but is one dimensional. He has a big heart, will come forward but he is up against a southpaw mover who can get stuck in. He will face problems.

“Every meaningful fight I’ve had has been on the road. Tyrone McKenna I went to Belfast, Tom Stalker we were in Liverpool and Tyrone Nurse in Leeds.

“I don’t mind travelling and Edinburgh for a scrap would be brilliant. I have already planned English drummers to walk me out.”

Josh Taylor has stated that Jose Ramirez is vulnerable and quite easy to find – meaning he won’t have to go looking to land punches on him in the fight ahead of their huge undisputed showdown on Saturday.

IBF and WBA super-lightweight champion Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) faces WBC and WBO super-lightweight champion Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) this weekend, with the event taking place at Las Vegas’ newest world-class casino resort, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

The event will be broadcast live on Fite TV in the UK and on ESPN in the USA, and Taylor spoke in-depth about the battle when taking part in a conference call this week.

Taylor said: “I’m nice and relaxed about this week and couldn’t be anymore prepared mentally and physically. I’m not wasting energy thinking about the fight, it’s just another day at the office. A lot of eyes are on me but I’m totally confident in myself.

“I think he’s vulnerable and quite easy to find. I won’t have to go looking for me to hit him, and I think that means it has all the makings of a barnburner because he comes to fight and I do too.

“I’ve never been so happy with a fight camp, and we’ve had a nice, long preparation for this. After my last fight I took a few weeks off and went home for Christmas, but I was always ticking over in the gym back home and then I’ve been back on it since New Year.

“I have trained diligently and sharply and I’ve got a great game plan. I’m used to the big stage as I’ve been on it since 2010 in the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games and on some big events as a professional. I thrive under the bright lights.

“This fight means the world to me. It is a massive piece of history for both of us and this gives me the chance to cement my name in boxing. I’m on the cusp of something great and having the fans there gives you that extra bit of butterflies too.

“It’s a shame that there can’t be more fans there, but they’ll just make it bigger better and special. They give you that extra fire and determination and I’m relishing this opportunity and can’t wait.”

Josh Taylor is setting his sights on making sporting history as he prepares to take on Jose Ramirez in their huge undisputed showdown next week.

IBF and WBA super-lightweight champion Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) faces WBC and WBO super-lightweight champion Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) on Saturday 22 May, with the event taking place at Las Vegas’ newest world-class casino resort, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

A victory for Taylor would see him go down in both Scottish and British boxing history, and the ‘Tartan Tornado’ insists he has done everything in his power to make that happen.

Taylor told IFL TV: “I’ve trained hard and done everything I can do to the best of my ability. This is the best prepared I have ever been and I’m going to enjoy the ride.

“This is a colossal fight, not just for myself but for all of Scotland. I’d be the first person in Scotland to be a four-belt undisputed world champion, and the first undisputed champion since Ken Buchanan.

“To make sporting history and go into the history books is massive and gets my juices flowing. I’ve always dreamed of being undisputed champion and if you had told me a few years ago I’d nearly be here I wouldn’t have believed you.

“On paper Ramirez is my toughest fight to date. He’s a unified world champion and a decorated fighter, buy I can’t see him beating me, I can’t see it at all.”

Josh Taylor is engrossed his training camp for the biggest fight of his career, on May 22 in Las Vegas, against José Carlos Ramírez in a battle royal of undefeated champions, with ALL the super lightweight world titles on the line.

Taylor, who hopes to be the first Scottish boxer to become a unified champion, commented in an interview with the East Lothian Courier:

“I don’t feel any pressure. I have trained my whole life for this moment. It’s a dream fight and I’m sure any fighter on the planet would love to be a part of a fight like this. There is no pressure at all, and I am going to enjoy the chance and the opportunity to be the first Scotsman to be a unified champion.

“I would have loved for the match to be at Edinburgh Castle or Easter Road or even the SSE Hydro. It would have been great to have him here, but every fighter dreams of seeing his name in the bright lights of Las Vegas or New York’s Madison Square Garden. I am absolutely delighted for this fight, “commented Taylor.

“It is the biggest fight that exists and the biggest of my career. I’ve worked hard to get to this point my entire life and I’m absolutely thrilled.”
