Thomas Patrick Ward picked up the 30th win of his professional career, thanks to a stylish unanimous decision victory over Edy Valencia Mercado.

Ward (30-0-1, 4 KOs) came out on top thanks to scorecards of 98-92, 98-92 and 97-93, seeing him get back in the win column following his technical draw with Thomas Essomba last October.

“I hadn’t boxed for nearly a year before Essomba,” Ward told Sky Sports. “It was a bad year, and that wasn’t me on that night. We’re only humans and not machines, but tonight was a better night. It was a great fight for the fans, and I’m so happy to have them back. I really enjoyed it in there.

“At Super-Bantamweight I had a great ranking with the WBO, IBF and WBC. This fight was at 128lbs, but I’ve been chasing Emanuel Navarrete for a while.

Thomas Patrick Ward has vowed to return to the form that saw him win 29 fights in a row when he takes on tough Mexican Edy Valencia Mercado on Saturday.

Ward (29-0-1, 4 KOs) will look to extend his unbeaten run when he faces Mercado (17-5-6, 5 KOs) at the at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle, on the undercard of Lewis Ritson’s IBF super-lightweight title final eliminator against Jeremias Ponce.

In his last outing, Ward suffered a nasty cut and was held to a technical draw by Thomas Essomba, but he says that having fans back in attendance this weekend will help him come out on top.

Ward said: “I’m looking forward to being back out and fighting in front of a home crowd. My opponent is tough and will like to fight so I’m expecting a hard night, but my class and skill should help me win.

“The Mexican fighters always come to win and they’re strong, but I want to be challenging for important titles this year or next year so I need to win here.

“Going into my last fight it had been a bad year, but my main focus since then has just been staying ready and staying fit in the gym, and now I’m excited to be back.

“This fight is at featherweight, and we’ve talked about moving there for a while. We will see how I feel on Saturday and take it from there. It all depends on what fights come up.”

Elsewhere on Saturday’s card, local hero Joseph Laws also makes his return to the ring, as he goes up against Nestor Maradiaga.

Local heroes Thomas Patrick Ward and Joe Laws will both be part of next week’s huge Lewis Ritson vs. Jeremias Ponce show in Newcastle.

The Matchroom Boxing event takes place at the Vertu Motors Arena on Saturday and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports and DAZN, with Ritson and Ponce colliding in a final eliminator for the IBF super-lightweight title.

The undercard has now been announced, with Ward (29-0-1, 4 KOs) making his return against tough Mexican Edy Valencia Mercado (17-5-6, 5 KOs).

Ward is back following his fight with Thomas Essomba last October, now turning his attention to Mercado, who in his last fight defeated previously unbeaten Jose Ramon Olmedia to win the vacant Mexico featherweight title.

The always-exciting Laws (9-1, 5 KOs) is in action too, going up against Italian-based-Nicaraguan Nestor Maradiagia (9-10-2, 5 KOs).

Maradiagia is coming off an impressive stoppage win over Ciprian Albert in April, and has also gone the distance with current European super-lightweight champion Sandor Martin.

Laws is looking to bounce back following his fight with Rylan Charlton, with ‘The Benwell Bomber’ going in search for his 10th professional victory.
