The Loaded Glove: The Deontay Wilder Video, Eddie Hearn Speaks & My Opinion
by Kris Anthony (krisanthonyboxing@gmail.com)
I have been quiet about this loaded/manipulated glove scenario because, to be honest, I didn’t quite not know what to say. The heavy costume was a bit silly, even if it weighed 40 lbs, a man of Wilder’s obvious build and strength should make this a bit of a joke, with Wilder leaving himself open to ridicule which I personally think was warranted.
And then the glove accusations.
I nearly did a video on this but will do as more comes out but had to write something as I now have an opinion.
Initial reaction like many (not all) was “here we go, second excuse.” I had seen and read many others opinions and could see both sides of the argument, but I will admit, I was a little biased as I could not see Fury nor his camp resorting to these low kind of levels. There are always scandals within boxing (and other sports) and things like this make good news. There was the tainted wild boar meat with Fury, and lets say he did, there are plenty of other top level heavyweights over the years that have had this thrown at them, it appears to be part of the game (but not right). But loaded gloves?
The last time I can recall such an accusation was the loaded raps of Antonio Margarito against Miguel Cotto (their first fight) in 2008 and wind back the clock to the sad story of the “Irish” Billy Collins vs Luis Resto fight which had loaded gloves used by Resto. Would Fury stoop to this level? Surely not. No way, he didn’t need to.
That is how I left it and the reason I did not write about it as was just, well, I think not wanting to believe that this was true. Up until viewing the video from Wilder, I was not wanting to believe, and maybe I had actually seen the fight footage prior but just missed it or I was not looking at it with unbiased eyes (we are all human)
My point is this, watch the video and see at 0:51 and how the glove flaps back. It is not a camera angle, it is not lighting nor a trick of the eye. Is it loaded, you can’t tell but the glove was examined by the powers to be in boxing so it suggests not. Has it had anything taken out? I doubt it and again, they were checked by the commission. Once in the ring, can a glove be pulled further down the arm results in this happening? It would be hard as gloves usually have to be cut off. All I can say and I stand by this, and shoot me for my opinion, but something is not right, whether it be intentional or not. Take any preconceived views out of your mind and watch it a few times. I do not like admitting it, but it is not right.
But blaming the ref and mark Breland is bang out of order when Breland was just protecting his fighter and was the correct call for sure. Wilder’s ego is through the roof, he is looking to blame something or some else for his loss. The costume, his cornerman, the referee and yes, the gloves. But, it does not mean there was SOMETHING wrong which it looks like there was, for whatever reason.
Anyway, more on this on another post. For the moment it appears Wilder still want’s his shot at Fury. Why it has taken so long for him to reappear I don’t know.
“When that fight was a draw, I told you that I would give you a rematch. You know I was offered more money to fight Joshua than I was getting to fight you. Again being a man of my word, I fought you like I said I would,” Wilder stated.
With this in mind, Eddie Hearn has said the following to IFLTV:
“It’s ridiculous. Listen, park him to the side, let the big boys, the real men go at it. “Unless you’ve got any real substance then be quiet, go back to the drawing board, work harder, let the hunger burn to become champion again.
“It’s gone from the costume, to now he’s been found out about AJ, to now something about the gloves. It’s getting worse and worse.”
“[We received] loads of criticism and it hurt because I knew how much we wanted to make that fight and I knew they were playing games,” Hearn added.
“AJ has always pushed me to make the undisputed fight and you’ve just seen it unfold in one tweet. To be quite honest it’s sweet as a nut.”
With COVID-19 on the increase, for the moment lets hope and pray the world is safe and that the boxing match we all want to see doe’s not get further delayed.
Then there is Wilder to deal with.
