Vergil Ortiz: A Win Over Hooker Opens a Lot of Doors
Vergil Ortiz knows that defeating former world champion Maurice Hooker on March 20 can put him within touching distance of a world title shot.
Ortiz Jr (16-0, 16 KOs) faces Hooker (27-1-3, 18 KOs) on a Golden Boy Promotions event in Dallas, Texas, with the fight broadcast live around the world on DAZN.
The undefeated sensation will move even closer to a crack at world honours with a victory over Hooker, and he plans on taking full advantage of the opportunity.
Ortiz told Sky Sports: “A win over Maurice Hooker would definitely open a lot of doors to get that world title shot and I’m looking forward to it.
“We’re going to want to prove that we’re ready for a world title shot at 147. He’s going to want to prove that he’s still one of the best in the boxing game. It’s going to be a really good fight, it’s going to be very exciting.
“I don’t think the world champions would want to face me because I’m 22-years-old. They’re going to say he’s too young. I feel like I’m a high risk, low reward fighter.”
