WBC Cruiserweight Champ Makabu is King of the Congo
World Boxing Council cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu (28-2, 25 knockouts) has shown how to overcome adversity.
He made the first successful defense of his title by knocking out Olanrewaju Durodola in the seventh round in late December last year in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
But Makabu had a difficult road to be crowned world champion. In 2016 he fell against Englishman Tony Bellew, with the WBC Green and Gold Belt at stake. Despite having sent Bellew to the canvas in the first round, Tony retaliated and stopped him.
However, Makabu did not give up. He had to start all over again to work his way back to the world title. After garnering major triumphs, his redemption came on January 31, 2020, when he defeated previously unbeaten Michal Cieslak for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title.
Makabu showed that despite having stumbled, he overcame all obstacles to conquer and realize his dream.
The newly appointed Minister of Sports and Promotion of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Serge Nkonde, had a meeting with the champion Makabu and his team, where in addition to congratulating them on the achievements made, he offered them support to carry out the next defense of his title in this great city.
