This morning the Celebrations of “2021, the Year of Boxing” officially kicked off, and what better way to do it than with an historic event that marked a before and after for Cancun…the historic Night of Champions.
Only a few months had passed since Hurricane Wilma lambasted Cancun with full force, as one of the strongest natural phenomena in its history. A blow of epic proportions, especially in the hotel zone and across the beaches.
At that time, the President of the WBC, Don Jose Sulaiman, focused all of his energy and efforts in helping the people Cancun, and immediately sent all the necessary help. However, the support did not stop there, because as Don José always did, he bet on boxing.
He knew that this would be the balm and relief that Cancun really needed, as a way to contribute to the recovery of the State. So with the assistance of promoter Pepe Gomez, there was an unprecedented event “Night of Champions” where the WBC brought together 92 world champions.
Today, in this great celebration, we were accompanied by some of the great stars of the ring who led us, in remembering that extraordinary celebration.
All of our guests were nostalgic, recalling those moments where all the champions united as a huge family, enjoying all the surprises that the WBC and Cancun prepared, in order to send the message to the world that it was indeed on its feet, ready to welcome everyone!
Marvelous and poignant memories relived, when at the beginning a superb video was shown that took us through those incredible three days that remained forever engraved in the hearts of all who made this event possible.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán urged promoter Pepe Gomez to hold a second edition of the Night of Champions, when the easing of the pandemic permits.
