WBF Championship results from Mexico & South Africa
Two new World Boxing Federation (WBF) champions were crowned in Mexico on Saturday, July 24, while one WBF champion retained his title and a new titlist was belted on Sunday, July 25, in South Africa.
In Chiapas, Mexico, local hero Cesar Armando “Jaguar” Marquez stopped previously undefeated Ricardo Cortez from El Salvador in nine rounds to win the vacant WBF World Super Welterweight title.
Cortez started the fight strong, but was knocked down at the end of round one. In round two the visitor knocked Marquez down, but from round three the home man started to take over while Cortez began to tire.
In round nine Marques was in full control and scored two knock-downs, forcing referee Ray Armendariz to save the brave but clearly hurt Cortez from more punishment.
The new WBF World Super Welterweight Champion improved his professional record to 10-1-1 (7). Ricardo Cortez falls to 9-1-1 (7).
In a very entertaining all-Mexican scrap on the same card, Ulises “Chino” Moguel captured the vacant WBF Intercontinental Lightweight title with a unanimous decision over Ruben Estrella.
Judge Carlos Gomez Santiago scored the fight 96-94, while judges Fernando Renteria and Ray Armendariz saw it wider at 98-92 and 100-90. Moguel improved to 8-0 (5), Estrella drops to 8-5-2 (3).
The following day in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Thembelani Okolo retained the WBF International Strawweight title with a stoppage in eight rounds of Phumlani Maloni.
Making his first title-defense, Okolo looked strong all the way as he improved his pro ledger to 10-5-1 (6)). Maloni, coming off two solid victories, is now 6-4 (3).
In the co-featured bout, former South African champion Luzuko Siyo stopped WBF All Africa Champion Sanele Magwaza in round nine to lift the vacant WBF Intercontinental Bantamweight title.
Following knock-downs in rounds eight and nine, referee Stephen Simon waved it off. Siyo took his record to 18-5 (15), and Magwaza is now 5-2 (2).
