WBO Visited Vieques On Summer Boxing Gym Grand Opening
Vieques, Puerto Rico – The World Boxing Organization (WBO), chaired by Lcdo. Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcárcel and under his world renowned program ‘WBO Kids Drug Free’, visited the island municipality of Vieques on Wednesday afternoon to finalize the plan to establish a large-scale boxing gym for the use and enjoyment of the Viequenses.
The Vieques Multiple Use Center, located in the Monte Santo neighborhood, was the place chosen to create the boxing gym that will be named Carlos ‘Taso’ Zen ٕ ón, which will have various boxing equipment suitable for all ages, a ring, gloves of different sizes, face shields, bags, pears, weight equipment and equipment directed for coaches, among other sporting goods to obtain the best possible performance and focus.
“Boxing is not just hitting yourself. Boxing is the discipline that develops youth, taking boys off the streets, making good citizens, That is boxing and on behalf of the WBO our commitment is to adopt the gym and provide all the equipment you need so that they can have a good gym and that the youth of Vieques get up and discipline themselves in the best way. The youth of today are the future of tomorrow. This is a commitment that we originally made with Carlos Zenón and that we are going to fulfill and honor, ”said Valcárcel.
The honorable mayor of Vieques, José Corcino Acevedo, stressed that, “The gym will be in a central location and is close to where many boys in the area go out and it will be very useful for their well-being.”
The activity was attended by the Viequense coach Héctor Mulero, the municipal Sports and Recreation director, Mr. Héctor L. Pérez Horta, the Secretary of the Sports and Recreation Department, Ray Quiñones, and the president of the Puerto Rico Amateur Boxing Federation. Rico José Laureano, as well as Luis Batista Salas, founding president of the OMB and the legal advisor of the organization, Gustavo Olivieri.
‘WBO Kids Drug Free’ is an international program aimed at children and young people in order to carry a message of prevention of drug use and motivate them to continue in studies, using sport as a tool to keep on track, as well as to support causes aimed at those most in need in order to help them obtain a better quality of life.
