“We Need The Gate” – Frank Warren on Fury vs Wilder 3
by Kris Anthony (krisanthonyboxing@gmail.com)
I’m sorry, this is not good news for anyone that is licking their lips on the prospect of this bout this year and is just an opinion.
When asked if the third fight between Fury and Wilder will go ahead without a line gate, Frank Warren (Fury’s UK promoter) had the following to say…
“Not a fight of that magnitude,” Warren told Good Morning Britain.
I fully get it. You need the gate as well as the PPV fees. But (and isn’t there always a but), if alternate country’s have to be sought who would pay to as such to advertise their country, this will take further planning and further time. This equals delay which means December is surely out of the question.
“Wilder and Fury was the highest grossing [heavyweight] fight to ever take place in Vegas. We just can’t lose that gate. It’s a huge amount of money. We need the gate. Or we come up with a scenario where there is a huge site fee from a territory to take it, and we use it to promote their country. We are looking at those situations.”
So 2021 is looking likely, but with the current COVID-19 going for round two with a second wave (in the UK), somewhere other than the norm to host this fight seems likely.
