Cruveillier, Shamonova & Shishmareva defended their titles @ EUBC U22

Twenty finals were held on the last competition day at the EUBC European U22 Boxing Championships in Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy. The gold medals have been shared between Russia, Italy, France, England, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Armenia and Ireland.

Roseto degli Abruzzi hosted the 2018 EUBC European Youth Boxing Championships. After three years, a continental event returned to the city which is located in the Umbria region of Italy.

The following record number of 41 nations attended the EUBC U22 European Boxing Championships: Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and Wales.

‘We admired many excellent performances in the finals of the EUBC U22 European Boxing Championships. This is a fantastic news and shows that the European Boxing can look at the future with great hope and we are optimism about Paris 2024,’ summarized the performance of the finalists shortly the President of the European Boxing Confederation Mr. Franco Falcinelli.

France’s Romane Moulai reached her first big title

France’s promising Romane Moulai competed in the U22 events already in 2018 but she was not the main favorite for the gold medal at the women’s flyweight (51kg). The 22-year-old French girl met with an energetic German, Maxi Kloetzer in the final and she proved her best performance just in the title contest. The smaller German has never stopped attacking in the final but Moulai worked well also from closer and longer distances. Moulai’s uppercuts were dangerous for the German boxer and claimed France’s first title in Roseto degli Abruzzi. Her teammate Caroline Cruveillier defended her U22 gold medal at the women’s bantamweight (54kg) with excellent performance.

“I knew I had to keep focus against my German opponent who wanted the gold medal so much. She is a girl who tried to land heavy punches with good defence, therefore, I had to work from inside and find the best angles. I won silver three years ago and came to Roseto for the gold. I am so happy that I defeated the Italian Youth Olympic Games winner in the semi-final and I believe that shows my progress,” said France’s Romane Moulai.

Germany’s Stefanie Von Berge has done a professional job in her third European final

Germany’s Stefanie Von Berge had an impressive career in the junior and youth age between 2016 and 2019. Following her unsuccessful campaign at the welterweight (69kg), she moved back to the light welterweight (64kg). The 20-year-old German proved a fantastic performance against Hungary’s Luca Hamori in the semi-final and she used the same tactic in the final when she met with Russia’s Natalia Sychugova. Von Berge kept the distance successfully in the first round and used her longer reach well and continued that pathway in the second. Von Berge received a warning in the final moments of the second round but she was too smart for the Russian and won a European title.

“It is my third time being in the European final but this is the first occasion when I could take the gold medal. I never gave up to reach this title; hard work always paid off. The persistence and the stamina were my key words during my career,” commented her first gold medal Germany’s Stefanie Von Berge.

Russia’s duo Anastasia Shamonova and Maria Shishmareva defended their U22 titles

Russia’s Anastasia Shamonova amazed as a youth boxer, she won all of her major championships in 2017 and in 2018. The two-time AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion had the dominancy in the first round against Lithuania’s Gabriele Stonkute who competed also in several big events. The Russian middleweight (75kg) boxer overcame her one-year younger Lithuanian opponent in the exchanges and she proved that she is one of the biggest talents in the world. Shamonova arrived as titleholder to the event and she was able to defend this gold medal in Roseto degli Abruzzi.

Russia’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Maria Shishmareva moved up to the heavyweight (+81kg) in recent months and she advanced to the final of the competition. The Russian girl had a strong final opponent, Ukraine’s Maria Lovchynska, and tried to keep the distance from the first seconds. The Ukrainian was confident especially in the second round and moved ahead to catch the experienced Russian. The final verdict depended on their performance in the third when Shishmareva had excellent stamina and claimed her next title.

Strong Russian performance in the evening session

The Russian male boxers controlled three-in-a-row finals at the EUBC U22 European Boxing Championships. Belgrade Winner Tournament gold medallist Nikita Voronov defeated Germany’s Kevin Boakye Schumann in the men’s middleweight (75kg) first. His AIBA Youth World Champion teammate Ruslan Kolesnikov was a favorite against Armenia’s Hambardzum Hakobyan in the light heavyweight (81kg) and he accomplished his goal, took the U22 title in Roseto. Former AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships silver medallist Vladimir Uzunyan had hard work against Georgia’s Artyom Yordanyan who proved strong development in the whole event but the Russian has been crowned in the heavyweight (91kg).
