The young 15 and 16-year-old athletes will attend the EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia in the upcoming 12 days.

115 girls and 224 boys from 30 countries are registered to take part in the competition. That means the event will be much bigger than the 2020 edition in Sofia.

Female boxers can participate in the competition in 13 categories from the pinweight (46kg) up to the heavyweight (+80kg). The male athletes can also compete in 13 different divisions which are the same as for the girls: 46kg, 48kg, 50kg, 52kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63kg, 66kg, 70kg, 75kg, 80kg and +80kg.

The first competition day is scheduled for July 3, and the final bouts are set for July 11.

History of the EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships 1992-2019

The first edition of the European Junior Boxing Championships for the 15 and 16-year-old talents was called European Cadet Boxing Championships. The first edition tournament was held in Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy in 1992 and was unofficial.

The first official European Cadet Boxing Championships took place in Aosta, Italy in 1996 and ten champions have been crowned including Azerbaijan’s Agassi Mamedov who had a great elite career later. The European Cadet Boxing Championships was hosted by Macedonia, Latvia, Azerbaijan, Greece, England, Ukraine, Lithuania, Russia, Albania and Hungary until 2007.

The age group of the 15 and 16-year-old boxers was renamed as junior on January 1, 2008 and the tournament got its new name – European Junior Boxing Championships.

Bulgaria’s Plovdiv hosted the first event under the name of the European Junior Boxing Championships in June 2008. The 2018 edition of the EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships was the first when the female and male boxers competed together at the same venue.
