Harry Scarff vs. Jan Balog

Harry Scarff is in the form of his life, and there is nothing coincidental about it. When the
world went into lockdown, the world’s population endured one of its most mentally
challenging moments in our lifetime, and for Derby’s ‘Horrible’ Harry Scarff it was about
focussing on his boxing training which he saw as his haven.

Keeping match fit through difficult times has been a blessing in disguise for Scarff, which
he has proven with his ring activity and the performances on display which came with them.
A career-best performance against highly touted Troy Williamson was then followed up with
a one round blowout in Belgium back in March.

Scarff will now look to follow up on his big KO victory when he laces the gloves up again on
Saturday June 5, fighting live on Fightzone on the undercard of a tremendous bill-topper between Salford’s Marc Leach and Midlands-based Thomas Essomba.

“Training throughout [the pandemic] has kept me in a good place.” admitted the 27-year-
old.  He continued; “after stopping the guy on the Belgium show, me and Clifton [Mitchell] are
really starting to clearly see the improvements I’ve been making in the last year.”

Scarff may have a loss against his name when he took on Troy Williamson, but it was the
Derby boxer who came out of the fight with all the praise.

“I was really pissed off with the result as you can imagine, but after calming down and
looking back at the fight, there were many positives I took from that fight. I may have the
loss on my record, but let’s face it, I know and everyone who watched the fight knows, I
won.

“The performance has given me a lot of confidence in my own boxing ability. I took that
fight with a week’s notice as the away fighter and beat the home fighter. Sure, the result
didn’t work out in my favour, but it is what it is.”

A rematch was the most obvious outcome for both fighters but failed to materialise. Scarff
now has his sights set at taking on the best fighters on offer, but this time in another weight
division.

“I’ve been making 154lbs [super welterweight] comfortably my whole career, so me and
Clifton spoke about it, and we decided to move down to 147 [welterweight].” says Scarff.

He continued; “I feel fitter and stronger at the weight already, my performance in Belgium
has proven that.

“I’m ready for titles and want a title fight next. I’m in the ‘who needs him club’ at the
moment and a title around my waist should lure these fighters out to challenge me. I want
any British fighter in the top 10 of the division.

“I have this Saturday’s fight to focus on first, and Fightzone viewers can expect an exciting
performance from me. I’m ready to go now and I can’t wait to get in that ring and get the
knockout victory.”

Dennis Hobson and Steve Crump’s Fight Academy present an evening of boxing at Sheffield Arena Car Park on Saturday June 5.  Headlining will be Salford’s Marc Leach versus Wolverhampton-based Thomas Essomba in a British Super Bantamweight Title eliminator.

Also on the bill will be Grimsby’s Levi Giles; Derby’s Harry Scarff; Ayr’s Calvin McCord; Bromley’s James Hawley; Leicester’s Jake James; Reece Mould from Leeds, and debutant Harry Mullins from Southwark.
