Danny Dignum produced a superb performance as he stopped Grant Dennis to retain his WBO European middleweight title on Friday’s action-packed #MTKFightNight.

The two men went head to head at York Hall in London, with undefeated Dignum dropping Dennis several times in round six to keep hold of his title.

Elsewhere on the card, Lee McGregor was held to a controversial draw with Diego Ruiz, while there were also wins for Bilal Fawaz, Paul Ryan, Joe Giles, George Mitchell and Jordan Flynn.

WBO EUROPEAN MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE

DANNY DIGNUM def. GRANT DENNIS via TKO at 2:31 of round 6

Danny Dignum extended his beaten record as he stopped Grant Dennis in the sixth round to retain his WBO European middleweight title.

It was a back and forth affair between Dignum (14-0-1, 8 KOs) and Dennis (17-4, 3 KOs) during the opening rounds of the contest, but Dignum began to take over as the halfway stage approached.

Dignum dropped Dennis at the start of round six, with two more knockdowns following, and while he was able to get up to his feet each time, the referee decided he had seen enough and waved off the bout, handing Dignum the impressive win.

Dignum said: “I feel good. I’ve had 10 months out of the ring and now I’m back to winning ways. I just want to keep the ball rolling and I want a date pencilled in straight away.

“Full credit to Grant Dennis. He’s a good fighter, but I felt he was a bit negative and I felt I had to chase him a bit, but that was probably the right tactics for him as I may have got him out of there a bit sooner.

“Win, lose or draw, we learn from it, and thank you to my team, as I couldn’t do it without them. We’re learning day in, day out in the gym.”

LEE MCGREGOR drew with DIEGO RUIZ 95-95 after 10 rounds

There was a controversial result for Lee McGregor, after he was held to a draw against Diego Ruiz after 10 rounds of action.

McGregor (11-0-1, 9 KOs) appeared to be getting the better of the rounds, but Ruiz (23-4-1, 12 KOs) wouldn’t be deterred, attempting to give everything that he got back.

The fight went the distance in a competitive battle, and while it seemed like McGregor had still done enough to win, referee Kieran McCann disagreed, as he scored it 95-95, meaning the bout ended in a draw.

BILAL FAWAZ def. VLADIMIR FLEISCHHAUER at 1:41 of round 3

Bilal Fawaz finally got the chance to make his professional debut and he certainly made it count, claiming a third round stoppage win over Vladimir Fleischhauer.

Fawaz (1-0, 1 KO) has already been through a lot of hardship in his life, after he was illegally trafficked to the UK as a 14-year-old and kept as a modern-day slave, before managing to escape and turning to boxing.

After a long battle with the home office, he was finally given permission to legally stay in the UK, allowing him to step into the ring as a professional for the first time.

He produced a superb display, dominating proceedings before unleashing a flurry of punches on Fleischhauer in round three, with the referee jumping in and handing Fawaz a memorable victory.

Fawaz said: “I feel amazing, the feeling is overwhelming, you can’t pay for this feeling. I’ve been fighting for 17 years, and now I’ve finally had the platform to make my professional debut.

“I want to entertain, and it’s good to get the rounds under my belt in my first fight. I have gears, you don’t drive a car in gear six right at the start, you shift through the gears.

“Thank you to everyone for the support. I cannot stress enough that without people’s support I wouldn’t be her. Whoever is in my weight class, I’m coming, I’m coming for all of it, I’m hungry, and I’m fighting for my future and my life.”

JOE GILES def. LEWIS VAN POETSCH 40-36 on points after 4 rounds

The massively popular Joe Giles made it two wins from two in the professional ranks, as he claimed a four round points win over Lewis van Poetsch.

Giles (2-0) packed out York Hall with his army of fans once again, as they witnessed him put in a classy performance against the always-entertaining van Poetsch, with the journeyman legend doing his best to remain in the contest for all for rounds.

There was only one winner when the final bell tolled, with Giles claiming the 40-36 points victory to bank some more valuable rounds and extend his unbeaten record.

Giles said: “Every time I come out and hear the noise it’s amazing. He is a tough opponent and has loads of experience so it’s all learning for me.

“I want to keep as busy as possible, I want at least five fights and maybe even six this year. If MTK Global keeps me active I’ll do my best to keep selling the tickets and doing the best I can.”

PAUL RYAN def. CJ WOOD at 2:26 of round 1

Irish rising star Paul Ryan produced another impressive quickfire victory as he stopped CJ Wood inside the first round of their bout.

Ryan (3-0, 2 KOs) was coming off the back of a 47 second first round knockout win last time out, and it was clear he was hoping for the same again, coming quick out of the blocks and crunching Wood with a nasty body shot early into the bout.

He never recovered from that, with Ryan dropping Wood twice during the first round, with the second knockdown proving to be too much, as the referee waved off the fight and Ryan claimed a fantasitc win.

Ryan said: “I want to make a statement every single fight. I think I’m the best prospect out there and I want to prove it every single time.

“I want to stay busy and keep getting better and improving every time. Whether it’s one round, six round, or ten rounds, I will win every time.

“World domination is what we want. I spar the best in the world day in day out. That’s where I face my challenges and I’ll show what I learn when I’m in the ring.”

GEORGE MITCHELL def. VASIF MAMEDOV 40-36 on points after 4 rounds

George Mitchell put on another classy display as he claimed a comfortable four rounds points win against Vasif Mamedov.

Mitchell (3-0, 1 KO) was back in action after a stoppage win at the end of 2021, and he picked up right where he left off, dictating proceedings from start to finish.

At just 20-years-old, the youngster looks destined for big success, as he got his hand raised after a dominant performance against Mamedov.

Mitchell said: “He was a tough opponent, so I just stuck to my boxing and got the rounds in. I didn’t want to force trying to get him out of there, as then you end up just blowing yourself out.

“This year I just want to get fights. I want four or five more fights. I couldn’t fight much during COVID, so now it’s about getting active. Thanks to everyone that came out to support me, as without them it’s nothing.”

JORDAN FLYNN def. MARIAN MARIUS ISTRATE 59-55 on points after 6 rounds

Undefeated Jordan Flynn was involved in a fantastic battle as he secured the points victory over Marian Marius Istrate.

Both fighters left absolutely everything in the ring, throwing huge shots at one another and marching forward throughout all six rounds.

It was Flynn (4-0) who was getting the better of the exchanges throughout the rounds, and his hard work was deservedly rewarded when the referee scored it 59-55 in his favour, in a fight that the fans in attendance loved.
